I'd Like to Introduce Myself - A Panama Mama

IMG_4492.JPG

Hello all!! I am A Panama Mama and I am brand new to steemit! I love writing blogs and sharing information about where we live, deals, homeschooling and so much more. I can't wait to really get going in the steemit community.

Here is some information about me:

  • I live in Tierras Altas, Panama with my husband, 5 kids, 2 cats and white Japanese Akita dog. We love the weather here and the expat community.
  • I speak Spanish because I studied it in school and have lived for a month in Spain and a year and a half in Mexico. No one else in my family speaks Spanish. Me encanta el espanol.
  • We moved here from near Dallas, Texas where my husband and I met in the 8th grade on a school bus back in 1991, but we didn't date until many years later and have been married for 11 years.
  • I learned to quilt when my oldest son (who is now 8) was a baby and I love to quilt in my free time.
  • Our kids are homeschooled by me and we did this in Texas as well.
  • My facebook is A Panama Mama

Whenever we go out, we always hear one thing from the people who see us. What do you think that is?

welcome to steemit. I hope you'll love it here as much as I do. It's a great community. Looking forward to read more! It's good to see more home schoolers here. Funny enough, I've always wanted to quilt a blanket and actually planning to make one this winter with the kids :) Following you.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm liking it here so far! Quilting is a lot of fun. I just love that I can see the finished product within a few days or weeks if I work really hard and each quilt tells a story.

Welcome to Steemit! What made you move from Texas to Panama?

Thanks! A couple of different things. Different culture for the kids (and us). Work opportunities and just wanting to get a different perspective. We love it here!

Welcome from a 15-year veteran unschooling Mama in the UK! I'll Follow and look forward to seeing your posts :o) x

Oh nice! We have been schooling for 2 years (my oldest is 8). We use the Charlotte Mason method which a lot of people refer to as unschooling. :)

unschooling here too :)

I've never heard of that one, but you've piqued my interest! I discovered the concept of unschooling via the work of John Holt, whilst I was searching during pregnancy for an alternative to the British school system, which I was VERY sure I wouldn't be subjecting my then unborn child to. My now 15-year old has never been to school, nor coerced in any way. All learning is entirely learner-directed and autonomous, naturally occuring in the context of our interests and everyday lives together. And I have to say, what a fantastic human being that has allowed to unfold! x

So nice! What a great story and wonderful that it has worked so well for you all. Ours is literature based but involves no worksheets. Basically, I read a story to them and they tell me what they heard/learned. The literature is mostly classical - things like Little House on the Prairie, Lord of the Rings, Burgess Animal books, etc. We really like it because it isn't like, "here let me sit you down and tell you a bunch of information that I'm sure you'll forget." They remember stories that we've read long after!

I had a quick look, and funnily enough, the originator of the method you're using is British - and yet even as a 15-year vet at unschooling (and surrounded by homeschoolers!) I'd never heard of her! It just goes to show you, doesn't it, that the information we need comes to us each individually.

I would personally not be able to follow it (or any other) method, tbh because (to me) it would feel contrived or artificially-induced - manipulative, for want of a better word. My interactions with Raven are entirely devoid of any ulterior motive and any guidance I offer (or receive!) occurs entirely spontaneously, just as it would in conversation with a friend or any other loved one (spouse or whatever). So if we read a story together and a conversation arises out of that - which it often does, naturally, as it might very well do if you and I, for example, shared a story with each other - then we just...well...talk :o) We do a LOT of talking together, very naturally, but if I were initiating/insisting upon that and Raven was was being compelled to share feelings or observations to fulfil an agenda I had set? No, I couldn't and wouldn't do that. It would feel weird and 'wrong' to my inner sensibilities.

And in the same way that sometimes stories or events affect me profoundly but I'm not ready to share insights because I'm processing stuff internally, I'm also naturally/intuitively very much aware of that phenomena in Raven. We're both extremely attuned to, and respectful of, each others' internal dialogue. That's just me/us, though. It's how we've always functioned together and I'm fiercely protective of Raven's right to experience life as a sentient, intelligent individual. We are 100% respectful of each others' oftentimes differing viewpoints and a part of that stems from the way I've parented Raven, definitely. It's the thing I'm most proud of in my life - that I can say I genuinely never coerced my child in any way; that I have always been 100% straight and truthful with my child; and that we are, above all, friends who adore each other. xx

Thanks for the response. Yes CM was British. Her method made a comeback in the 1980's or so I believe. I didn't hear about her until a few years ago when I was looking into homeschooling. A lot of the time, the kids will bring up what we have read well after having read it. I just like it better than having to do a bunch of boring workbook pages and counting that we've done school 190 days or whatever it is. Have a great day!

I didn't realize you were new to Steemit. Welcome! I know you'll love it! Be sure to download eSteem mobile app. I cannot stress how useful the app is so you can Steem at any time.

Welcome to Steemit :) nice to meet you!

I found you by your comment on my post. I love to hear about families living the dream. I homeschooled our sons all of the way through school and at one point we thought of moving to Puerto Rico but ended up staying in Tennessee.
Best of luck with your journey! Upvoting and following

Thanks! Yes this move has been years in the making according to my husband. I wasn't all for it for a while but we really enjoy it here! And homeschooling has been good fun so far. I love getting to spend time with my kids!

"Whenever we go out, we always hear one thing from the people who see us. What do you think that is?"

I'm from a large family as well so I'll take a guess -or two- what people ask you when you're out and about:

  • Are you a [insert sport here] team?
  • Are they all yours?

Those questions seem less likely in Panama but they seem quite common for families with 5+ kids in the US.

Seriously! Those are two of the common ones we hear!!! :) I get "Are they all yours?" all the time from Panamanians. Apparently having 5 curly blondes in Panama is a phenomenon. We are like a parade everywhere we go. The sports team one usually comes from expats in the area - basketball. ;) People are curious about "large" families in any culture, I guess! Thanks for the response!

Interesting! I wouldn't have expected that from Panamanians but when I was there I was a married adult with my wife and 1 child so I imagine things would have been much different if it had been my parents with myself and my "many" siblings.

I'm sure the blonde hair helps everyone stand out :)

Panamanians seem to have 4 or less kids. Most have 2-3. Indigenous will have more, I believe, but I don't think they come out all together.

Welcome Friend .. I love that you visited my post .. it made me hop over to visit yours - Great intro .. I love that you met your hubby in 8th grade - I married my 5th grade sweetheart .. We have now been married 30 years this October :) Cheers to a life time of happiness with your hubby and also to Steemit success!!!! SUNSHINE247

So nice to see you here on steemit. You are so lucky women with 5 kids. I will love to more about your life and kids. Thanks for your kind comment on our blog. Love , peace from @Azizbd

I have lots of posts planned in the future to talk about what we do as a family. Stay tuned! :)
