I confess!
The time has come to reveal all.
My life-story. Conveniently divided, as I know you 'Steemers' lead busy lives, into three short, digestible chunks (with pictures).
Hopefully you'll stick around as I pour my little heart out to you:
1. CONFESSIONS OF A GLOBALIST
Firstly I apologise for the clickbait-y title, but let's face it, you wouldn't be reading this if I hadn't intrigued the pants off of you! As we all know 99.99% of introduction posts to a community are as boring as socks. But enough with the clothes analogies, let's get on with the shoe!
My name is Matthew Butler, and no, I'm not really a globalist ideologically. What I mean by that is that I myself have traveled and lived in many strange, wonderful (and completely usual) countries the globe.
I grew up in Zimbabwe (that's a country in Southern Africa) as I've precisely marked on this not-to-scale map:
When a hyper-inflationary wave of worthless paper impoverished the nation over a decade ago in a post World War Germany style mess, I remember the hungry queues that wound like a rope around each block.
Soon the Zimbabwean Government could no longer even afford to print their own money!
The special paper needed from Europe was too expensive, so ordinary office paper was used instead. This monopoly money was called a 'bearer cheque’ to make it sound respectable. Incredibly, there was an expiry date on each of them.
In other words, I used to own a LOT of these:
I'll save the details (both funny and tragic) for another post.
Needless to say, I was forced to leave Africa, and completed my education on that green, yet very muddy island (a special blend of heaven and hell): the United Kingdom of Great Britain:
Before ending up right here, where my bum sits now typing these words.
Like Dorothy, I too, have found the land of Oz: sunny Sydney Australia:
2. CONFESSIONS OF A GOLDBUG
It was probably my days spent in hyper-inflationary hell that sparked my love of gold and silver.
I continue to find it fascinating how few people bother to understand inflation. One of the most fundamental issues that impact their lives. The movie 'The Usual Suspects' had it right I say, with only a small twist to its famous quip:
"the greatest trick the FED ever pulled was convincing the world that inflation doesn't exist."
But that’s for another rant, in another post.
I've complied a list of some of the greatest investors and gurus that I personally know of. I've probably spent many thousands of hours listening to their voices or reading their words.
(note: I'm by no means am endorsing all the views of each and every one!).
Who are your favourite financial gurus? In the comment section below I promise to give the (soon-to-be-famous) #ButlersBoost endorsement to the first Steemer to correctly guess all the individuals on my leaderboard.
I’m confident (I'm not so confident) that this will boost that lucky Steemers comment profit up enormously! :) $$$$
Hopefully in future posts I can tackle the subject of the worlds broken economy (50% of you just clicked off to watch cat videos). Despite most thinking this is a boring a batsh*t topic, it is in fact the most fascinating tale of deceit and deviousness that you have ever heard. Move over 'Treasure Island’!
3. CONFESSIONS OF A BOHEMIAN
The official definition of a ‘bohemian’ is as follows:
- A native or inhabitant of Bohemia.
- A socially unconventional.
You decide which category might fit best.
Why bohemian? We’ll I’m interested in a lot of different fields. A rolling stone that has hopefully gathered a bit of moss.
You’ve heard how much I love the precious metals, but I’m also a political junkie (especially US and British politics... unfortunately Australian politics is a bit dull!) so I will be throwing in my two cents on all things political moving forward:
I’m also a fully qualified Professional Chartered Accountant, and have a degree in Business, Finance and Accounting #ABitBoring. I’ve done a number of years working as a slave for some of the largest audit companies in the world.
In a twist, I’m also a fully qualified graphics designer! And was the lead User Experience software designer for a technology company for a number of years designing and architecting their software. So with my mad design skills, I’m hoping to explain some complicated topics, in a fresh and engaging way.
I’ve started quite a few of my own companies (from a snack business, to camping equipment, to hire cars), and I’m currently designing and releasing a mobile app - which I definitely think we can have a bit of fun with on this blog, where I can give you an insiders look at things.
Elon Musk is an ex-Southern African, and so am I... that makes us... similar...ish?
At the moment I’m Marketing Manager for a large company.
Another thing: I've illustrated and authored a book for young adults:

And finally I'm a lover of science, physics, biology and big ideas!
END OF CONFESSION
Thank you for taking the time to read my introduction guys and gals!
I love the genius behind the Steem concept, and have so many ideas that I want to experiment with moving forward to see what this visionary format can do.
