After wandering about all of the Western US during most of my school and working years, I decided to drift recklessly, as I often do, to the Western edge of the Pacific Ocean to one of 7000+ tropical islands in the Philippines archipelago. For the last 10 years here I have not been just selfishly enjoying growing my bananas, coffee, coconuts, orchids and pineapples, but also pushing forward a few social agendas. These have been accomplished with the help of my Filipina partner in such crimes and several government projects, such as household electrification for over 100 of my poor rural neighbors, dispersals of livestock (cattle, carabao, pigs, and sheep) plus livelihood trainings.
I studied Social Work in college and intended to graduate and work in that field until I dropped out in my senior year (another story, so stay tuned!) Didn’t need the degree (or the salary) to do the work, just the right location and mindset. Otherwise I was a carpenter, car salesman, freight train conductor, farm hand and dental laboratory owner. The stint in college didn’t begin until my mid-fifties, shortly before coming here to my little bamboo shack in the mountains.
