I’m new and super excited about the possibility of existing in a Meritocracy.
As an opera singer I’d given up on this a long time ago, adapted to the “real world” but couldn’t help but keep on creating anyway, without reward, motivated by passion.
After Facebook started blocking my fan pages (creative content I worked very hard on…for free) I needed a new platform. This is perfect timing.
Here is a video in which I go into depth a bit more about who I am, my background, what my Steemit expectations are and what value I can contribute to the Steemit community.

Thank you!
Thanks. I plan on doing that after a week or so. I want to make sure this is working and a positive experience before I recommend it to my friends and fans on other social media. Sorry but I'm protective of them. I wouldn't recommend a medicine to them before making sure it works.
Oh it works Corinna. ;-)
I hope so...
I've been around here for a year now. This is the reason why you hardly ever find my on FB any more.
Welcome!
Thanks!
Welcome!
Thank you :)
Coco,
That's the most touching introduction I've seen on Steemit!
It's good to see you here! I hope the rest of our tribe will join too!
Cheers,
P
That would be wonderful. We had a great tribe! <3
Welcome to Steemit! I just gave you a little upvote! Thanks for being here! @reseller
Thanks!
Hi Coco / great, you made it - welcome to Steemit, upvoted and resteemed! Of course I follow you!
Danke mein Ottilein. Du bist ein Schatz. I don't yet know what resteem is...but it sounds nice! Hahahaha <3 Ich hab dich lieb.
Great introduction. Thank you for expressing yourself with a video, so we can begin to know your backstory, your tone of voice, the transitions you're facing, your mermaid creative outlets... and I can relate with your story of Gen X, and the expectations we had with our education and commitments. The world is changing, yeah, and we are all in this together, so I sincerely hope you will grow together with us, through Steemit. Looking forward to seeing more of the art in you.
Thank you so much!
Hi again, I want you to know I like this post of your so much I highlighted it yesterday in a curated list:The Top #11 List. Hope this way you'll receive some extra views on this nice intro. Best wishes!
That is so kind of you. Thanks! There's so much I want to answer based on your previous comment but I can't access Steemit from work computer and it's too much to type from phone. I will answer later from home.
Rooting for your successes, including prosperity, and connections, and acceptance, and an overall sense of love and lightness.
Thank you. I wanted to say that there are a lot of us Gen Xers feeling this way, this shame for not achieving after hard work. We're a small generation between 2 larger ones and kind of got lost between 2 worlds. There are a lot of articles out there describing the psychology of us....so don't feel bad..and when you do go watch some John Hughes films and listen to some Depeche Mode and The Cure and you will feel sane again. <3
:) Yeah, it's a relatable story for sure. And John Hughes films definitely help! The Breakfast Club, Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, The Great Outdoors… Movie medicine made just for us Gen Xers.
Hi @corinnaherden!
I want to welcome you to the beautiful community of Steemit, I gave you a follow. Hope you enjoy your stay :)!
Thank you :)
Corinna, Wexome to Steemit. I am sure you will flourish here. Thanks for sharing your voice and gifts with our group. Upvoted followed and resteemed
Thank you! What is resteemed? Sorry I'm a baby at this.
Corinna, the same as sharing on Facebook or retweeting on twitter. You click on the crooked arrow next to reply on a post.. Traderdad
Well jump right in. The water is fine.
I question the meritocracy analysis though as the rich, AKA Steemians with lots of Steem Power have more influence in the community.
It is a double edged sword but at least here you can speak out and not get censored or shadowblocked.
Looking forward to your upcoming post.
Just my two Steems Worth.
Thanks but aren't the rich Steemians rich based on the meritocracy as opposed to the real world where "I can be born rich and have no clue how a lot of the world lives since I've never worked a day in my life?"I would hope that a group like this where everybody has to prove their worth, will mostly have rich people who got that way based on value they contributed....or am I just still too naive here? Could be. I'm new....

Thank you. I love Gardenias. I can almost smell it. :)
Your welcome. This is my gardenia plant I have taken care of it for three years. Bring it inside in winter. It bloomed this year. Some years it doesn't bloom. It's very pungent when it opens up. I love it
Yes they are like Jasmine....so fragrant.
White gardenias always make me think of this story I read as a teenager.

Thanks so much!
You will do well on here! I felt the same excitement as you did. I have been hooked ever since. I was posting my videos on youtube for friends and family and one of the pilots told me that I could make crypto be a part of a new social media beta. So glad I came. It is a whole new world for me.
Have a great day. And welcome!
Thank you so much. Yes this is crazy wonderful. I hope this takes off. <3
One of the best and most complete introductions here. Welcome to Steemit!
Thank you <3
Welcome to Steemit, Corinna! Fellow Gen Xer here. I resonate deeply with your struggles so much.
My background is in art. I went to school for Graphic Design to realize I wasn't that great at computer art and I couldn't make money with my fine art.
Then I found writing...just when it was becoming an undervalued asset. So, while my story is different, it's the same.
I write because I must. As you said, my passion drives my art now.
I hope you will find it encouraging that in my 3 months on Steemit, I've made more money than I've managed to make with my own blogs and writing online as a freelancer for over a decade.
It's not a living...yet! I'm working on it!
So welcome. I'm looking forward to your posts!!! 💙
Thank you. I'm so sorry for your struggles. I think being Baby boomer kids we were all too ashamed to talk about it as if we failed etc. I don't know any opera singers who would admit to any of it...but that's why the producers can keep treating everybody like crap. I've seen this treatment all across the arts....even very well known artists are secretly working as bus drivers etc. (lucasfilm). It's a real scandal and unless we openly talk about these things, and let shame keep us silent...it's not going to change. look how powerful we are here. It Steemit works and we start getting that self confidence and validation of our worth back we will never accept no pay and bad treatment. <3 Good luck to you!
I just regarded it as a non-thing...bad luck. I've even felt that I had a false sense of entitlement to think I deserved to succeed, but you said it in your intro video....we were taught that if we were good at something and we were willing to put in the work, then we could find success.
I fully pursued that idea. I've been left wondering when and where the right opportunity would present itself as all the while I've put one foot in front of the other, learned new things, and lived by refusing to give up.
To hear someone else validate these struggles has been an emotional release. Perhaps I'm not crazy after all.
Feel validated. Seriously. We are a small sandwich generation and almost none of us got what we worked for. At first we had to suffer our parents shame about it and hear all sorts of stupid comments about how the competition must be hard...but where there was real, fair competition I did good...and there were no more real jobs period. There are a lot of articles out there about us so if you feel down just look. We are not alone but haven't said much out of shame but the world we live in is so extremely different than the previous generation. It's that way for artists, singers, writers, photographers, journalists etc. Most positions are freelance or temporary guest positions. There is no safety or dignity in this...and as I told another gen Xer above...when you feel bad go watch a John Hughes movie and listen to some Depeche Mode and The Cure and the world will feel right again. <3
Welcome, I watched the video and I guess there are many artists that totally relate to where you are coming from. I hope your talent and skills find their audience here, and you will get the pay off you deserve.
If I may say so, I was impressed by your library in the video and I tried hard to read the titles in there. ALIEN was the most prominent one of course, The Palace of Florence, Art of Persia, Klimt, Art Nouveau and so many other interesting picks. There is an Egyptian section, too, with several books and I am totally fascinated by it as well. And that black thick book to the right, with the beads, seems like a tome of forbidden lore!
In an older post (my own introduction post), I debated that one can know a person better just by looking at his book collection, and yours is really fascinating. Hope to see more from you soon! And, here is a part of my own collection...
Hahahah I love that so much! Yes it's true. Did you know that in old Hollywood there was a job where someone would come to your home and fill it with sophisticated books so you could impress your guests? It used to be so important to be well read etc. I've often thought that person would lose their job in the world of kindle etc. I still like to actually hold a book in my hand though and there's nothing better than the smell of an old bookshop. As to Giger, I was fortunate to meet him right before his death. He was already pretty out of it though but signed some books. The last documentary of him has a scene in Linz and I'm in the background. Love your books. I'll follow back. :)
Like so many others I'm deeply touched by your video. Glad Peter resteemd (shared) it. I grew up in cold war Europe (Bavaria) and my Grandfather came here from Silesia, so right there I can relate to a lot of things you are talking about. Many other things as well, all the way to your experiences with fb.
Also, as a visual artist, I share many of your experiences, but also similar dreams. What I find particularly interesting (and depressing) is, how your absolutely impressive education didn't seem to help much.
When I wanted to study art, I quickly was to find out, that the art world back then had little room for someone who wanted to work skill based. I had to take a route outside the academies and thank god, I did find the teachers with the knowledge and skill I was seeking in the end. But nevertheless I'm considered self taught, and my work is more or less outsider art...
I like the vision of a Meritocracy, particularly now, as we see the world shifting more and more to Kleptocracies and Olygarchies. Those who do the most for a society, like all those with a social commitment are payed ridiculously little, while the worst parasites are taking it all.
Things of value remain unseen and the stupidest nonsense can be worth millions, with the right promotion. I don't want to discourage you, but even here I get disappointed, when I see some amateurish scribbles get 100 times the attention of a carefully crafted post about a wonderful piece of art that was made with a lot of skill and devotion...
I too looked at your books, as I have a nice collection myself. In a way I find it funny, that the word "Alien" is so dominant, while you speak, and I am wondering, if we, the people who believe in true value, are aliens in this world.
For me steemit has become an important place to be. Not only because of the harassment of fb, but because of the wonderful people I have met here and the incredible amount of really wonderful and interesting content. Often the conversations have much more substance than anything you find on other platforms.
Looking forward to following your new path here on steemit!
Two lesser know tools I have found very helpful:
http://www.steemspectacles.com (Peter shared this already)
http://steemit.pics/IMGManager/index.php you can enter any username and quickly get an overview over that persons post. (Obviously more suited for posts with visual content)
Wow! Just wow! Thank you. I don't know if we've ever met in person but we've probably never had a conversation. I had no idea about any of this and I've seen your amazing art work before (maybe at the Palffy?)...and seen your name in our circle of friends. So you're a fellow Vertriebener. That makes me feel like I know you. Yes, these are very strange times and all you say is true. Like I said in the video I just accepted my fate and couldn't stop the passion flowing through me and just produced creative things anyway. I'll be posting most of it here again like other artists. Let me know when you are in Vienna again. I'd love to talk to you in person. De Es is having an event in October. Alles Liebe, Coco
I don't think we have met, but I too feel, like I know you... well, at least I know I have heard your name before! Its quite possible, that you have seen my work in Vienna and I know a lot of the artists there. Longing to go, but unfortunately October is already pretty full :-(
My grandfather came from Upper Silesia between wars, so he's not really "vertrieben". Nevertheless he suffered his whole life from having lost his homeland. He went back once, late in his life, but it seemed to only depress him more.
I'd love to meet, when I'm in Vienna, so I hope we keep in touch!
Here is my family history:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.31453321136.28482.523761136&type=1&l=a4aea8b8f7
and the link to my page with the graveyards. Maybe you will find relatives too. Where exactly are you from? I started a Silesian page with the same name but the locals aren't helping me like they do in the Czech Republic (taking and sending me pictures). https://www.facebook.com/Fast-vergessene-B%C3%B6hmische-Gr%C3%A4ber-Almost-forgotten-Bohemian-graves-1622720857945844/?ref=br_rs
Very interesting, thanks a lot for the links! Looks like there is a lot to explore...
welcome
Thank you.

Thank you!
Corina, I loved your introduction ! You have such a fascinating story! When my BF @meno participated in the @OpenMic and earned his first $100 he couldn't believe it, He said its the first time he is payed this much for his music - for a single song. I believe Steemit can be a great place for us artists! And you are fascinating. Following, Upvoting and resteeming.
Oh thank you so much for letting me know. I had no idea something like that exists. Congratulations to your boyfriend!
I'm glad! Perhaps we'll see you sing on OpenMic too. Also thank you @corinnaherden for following me.
Hi...
Artistically speaking....
I may be your opposite.
With that in mind.
Steem is whatever we dream...
Stay steemy.
Opposite? What do you mean?
I'm not a mermaid,
I have no training.
I'm unfocused, unbridled passion being displayed throughout the net like a shattered dream puzzle.
I didn't take very good care, of myself, my craft or my soul.
But, that was then....
I hold you in very high Esteem.
The value of art is interesting.
What I mean about opposite. ...my first regular gig singing was at a biker/karaoke
Bar.
I did a show Christmas night.... on the bloodstained stage of where a man was shot the day before.
First two songs were Sarah McLoughlin Angel into sympathy for the devil.
Opposite artistic paths.
Hahaha You are awesome!!!
So are you. Very nice to meet you.
Stay steemy
Thanks but if you had watched the video above you would have understood that making money on here is not my only goal/reason for being here.
The point is that artists can't stop creating and most of us have been creating for free and sharing our gifts for free. It's not until facebook got so greedy and blocked our free content from reaching audiences that I got fed up and started looking around. That being said I think it's shameful and unethical to except artists to work for free and not expect a reward for valuable contributions. That's like expecting your plumber, dentist, lawyer etc. to work for free for you.
