Honestly, the best way I've found to gain followers is just commenting with people in your niche. Try to be as meaningful as possible, but also aim at people that are also newer to steemit as they are more likely to follow back. Kudos to you to starting your path on steemit, just left you a follow and an upvote!

I can second this ^^^ also - Just like any other form of social media - don't feed the trolls and shit post comments - I've been lurking since January and only just started posting this past week. Stick with it.
