The sustainability geek

In a roundabout way, I joined steem because I'm into sustainability, which actually led me to blockchain. If you're interested in learning how I connected the two, keep reading.

When I went to college, I studied chemical engineering so that I had a chance of understanding some details behind sustainability - like what affect do pharmaceuticals have on our water systems, or how do you make fuel from plants. The lesson that I learned again and again was that we are aware of problems and their answers, but it's too much of a pain to implement them. In other words, most people would drive solar and wind powered electric vehicles if it was as easy to recharge them as it is to find a gas station and fill your tank. The trend didn't stop on the solution level though.

I realized that the reason why it was a pain to implement solutions was because it wasn't trivial to make a business case for it. So not only do we get stuck in the current situation because our current infrastructure is a pain to tear out and rebuild, but also because our economic infrastructure is not conducive to changes either. For example, it's harder to make a business case for building more expensive, more durable cars that won't need replacement parts and will reduce sales because the buying cycle has been extended, than it is to make a case for selling cars with cheaper parts that will need to be replaced with other parts that you also sell within a year, and the vehicle only lasts 75% as long. There is a conflict: what makes real sense (using fewer resources for the same outcome) doesn't make business sense (what earns the most money). Here is where blockchain comes in. (Disclaimer, this assumes you have a base level understanding of blockchain. If you don't, find another steemian's post explaining it to you and give them an upvote).

Blockchain actually allows people to define their own value. The best known example is bitcoin. Satoshi Nakamoto and team decided to name a token bitcoin, and see if other people also valued it. The answer at first was no, but now has become yes. The cool part is that anybody or any group can decide to develop a blockchain protocol and distribute a token to see if other people value it. I could define a token that businesses earn when they use fewer resources. If other people also value the token, this actually allows the durable car example make more business sense than the other. This is an oversimplified description of a blockchain token and the corresponding economics, but it makes the point.

Blockchain offers anybody the opportunity to define what they think is valuable. This gives anybody the ability help align business dynamics with what people need and want. Oh, and because of that reason, I was excited about blockchain, found steem, and here I am :)
