Unconventional Investing - A New Model for Venture Investing
Despite what entrepreneurs believe, there is no shortage of capital seeking investment opportunities, with roughly $121 billion now in dry powder in the venture capital (or “VC”) industry as of April 2017. Nor, despite what investors, academics, governments and NGOs seem to believe, is there a shortage of quality innovations with real business opportunity. Increasingly, despite heavy investment in fostering technology entrepreneurship globally, at issue is a sufficient flow of quality investment opportunities and related investment deal flow. At the heart of this problem are three interrelated forces:
- Limited and declining number of very early-stage investments;
- Investing only in individuals from elite circles; and
- Random selection rather than targeted development.
