Yet another minnow in the blue ocean--yikes!

Hi there fellow Steemians!

I’m a little fish swimming in from California and am new to the crypto space—and Steemit.

I’m also a mom to five (of various ages) and wife to one (thank goodness!) I’m an author of children’s books and have written several young adult fantasy and suspense/mystery novels. (I love mysteries!) I’ve also written books on how to be an author. I know much about writing and publishing having walked this road for the last 8 plus years.
And, oh yes, I’ve also homeschooled my kids—only two left to homeschool at home—YAY! (I say the “Yay!” with great enthusiasm and clapping.) Since I have been homeschooling our kids for the last 20 years, I’ve learned quite a bit on the topic as well.

My favorite things to do are: writing, reading, learning (about almost anything), and singing worship songs. I love to hear people laugh and see them smile. (Even if I am an introvert, and prefer to write rather than talk…) I don't particularly love to travel but do travel a couple of times a year so I may also blog about this when I go.

Oh, and I love animals and have 3 pets for now.

I came across the crypto currency world almost two months ago, and have been intrigued learning about block chains –I have no programming skills or knowledge and am non techie. So, learning about cryptos has been exciting—like venturing into a new land with wild plants and animals I’d never seen before. Perhaps one day I will know enough to write about it but not yet.

I like the idea of peer to peer social media as opposed to having a centralized power (like FB) in charge –although I won’t consider myself an anarchist. I have listened to a few interviews with Dan Larimer and I think he seems like a smart person and feel this platform will do well, take off, and be the future of social media. In fact, I am going to introduce Steemit to some of my author friends.

Now that I am on Steemit, I want to share my knowledge with others…basically writing, copywriting (I also used to be a copywriter—BC—Before Children,) how to self publish, homeschooling, parenting and also marketing. I worked in advertising and love reading/learning about marketing techniques and suggestions so I would love to share these things here too. I am not sure what else to share on…maybe some stories…fiction, mostly.

I read we are recommended to take a picture with the date we joined Steemit so others know I’m a real person but I’m not going to cos I hate taking pictures. (Generally, I dislike taking selfies!) You can connect with me on other social media I am on: https://www.facebook.com/emma.right.author/

Please pardon me for not taking part in the upvote/ downvote issues just yet because I still don't understand how/ why and what it all means--like what is meant by 50% upvote etc.Once I read more threads here I am sure I will get it and then I will also do the necessary things...be patient with me for now--it's April 2018, btw.

As for earning money here--of course that would be nice. But I also realize that I am only starting out and have to prove myself with quality write-ups that add value to other people's lives. Hopefully with time I can gain "fans" (??) or whatever they call it here.

So glad to "meet" you all.
Emma

Hello @emmarightauthor! Welcome to Steemit!

Looks like you will fit right in here. People that can write great content usually thrives here. You can look for writing challenges to get your name out there and build your followers. @sndbox usually run writing contests and they give out nice rewards.

How does homeschooling work? How do you get the materials or curriculum to teach your kids? I'm thinking of doing the same if I eventually have my own.

Looking forward to more from you.

Hope you have fun here.

Peace!

@johannrandall

Hi! I'll check Snbbox for sure.
Homeschool can be done in any number of ways. Since I have five, my first kiddo was like an experiment! Tried the totally hands-on type of homeschooling but that took way too long. For instance we visited a reservoir when we learned about reservoirs but you can imagine how time consuming this was. And we also went into making things as we learned...again took too long.

And as more and more kids came along it was not practical nor viable.

I would suggest doing a hybrid--basically more or less hands-on (depending on you and the child) and some readings and workbooks. We did a lot of read alouds which was awesome for bonding time, and a chance for the child to ask and talk about things we read on.

As for curriculum, there are plenty to choose from. especially nowadays when we can just Google. (I love Classical Education--reading classics.)

So now my two kids do a hybrid--they do online school which provides a curriculum (the students choose what classes to take--but of course there are the usual mandatory ones like English, Math and Science and a Social Science. And then we have reading and ECA--of their choice.

But when starting out the biggest lesson I learned is not to push the child. I pushed our first one the hardest and I think I somewhat killed the love of learning for him whilst the others all strive to excel on their own. Have fun with kids! They grow up...oh, too, too soon.

Take care!
Emma

Thank you for your reply @emmarightauthor!

It sounds fun going around in field trips with your kids. But I think you are right, hybrid looks like the more practical one.

What's an ECA?

I agree with you on not pushing a child. I've just listened to Naveen Jain, billionaire philanthropist who plans to mine on the moon, say 'you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.' So, it is better to develop in kids that thirst for learning.

Yeah, time flies.

Peace!

Hi and thanks, @hazelicious! I did check it out. I also tried to join one of those online lessons they have but i find the platform not easy to find things. I think I just need to explore it a bit slowly.

Wellcome 2 Steemit.com
