Hi necrophagist! Currently the chickens are aimed to just be egg slaves, but, they're all freeloaders at the moment! They should start laying any time now! cross fingers However, of the deed must be done, it shall be. But that would be all up to @smitty! Ha! I'm mostly the caretaker. I do most of the day-to-day loving, caring and feeding.
They are not meant to be pets as I always felt there was a chance they may end up in the slow cooker! But there is one chicken in particular that I feel a slight connection to!
As far as the workload, we stuck to just birds on purpose. It really doesn't seem to be a ton of work (yet?) because they all eat the same thing and have the same basic needs. I would say in the short 3.5 weeks I've had the gucklings, they've been more work than the whole 16 weeks of owning chickens! Ducks are messy and stinky!
I think the workload will grow exponentially once we add more furry friends.
