Istanbul's historic outlines can be divided into five major periods: the prehistoric period, the Byzantion period, the Eastern Roman period, the Ottoman period and the Turkish period.
Istanbul was one of the most important and largest metropolises of the world for about sixteen centuries from the 4th century to the 20th century. It was undoubtedly the sole ruler of a vast region of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and in this process it has influenced world history considerably.
During the period from the 330th to the 1922th for a thousand six hundred years, It was a capital city of four different empires, the Roman Empire (330-395), the Byzantine Empire (395-1204, 1261-1453), the Latin Empire (1204-1261) and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). Three of these empires have passed away in the period they existed as the ruling and powerful states of the world. The historical significance and value of the city can easily be understood when it is thought that all of you are ruled from Istanbul.
Istanbul lost its deep-rooted capitalism characteristic in 1923 with Ankara being the capital city, and every area that it preserved for fourteen centuries from the 4th to the 18th centuries became an effective 'world city' after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, has gained its place among the most important centers of Europe and the Middle East today.
Istanbul during the Byzantine Empire
Istanbul is a world city with a settlement date of 300 thousand, urban history of about 3 thousand, and capital city dating back to 1600 BC, at the intersection of Europe and Asia.
The city has been home to different civilizations and cultures throughout the ages and has been a unique mosaic in the historical process of preserving the cosmopolitan and metropolitan structure that various religions, languages and racial people lived together for centuries.
One of the rare settlements in the world that has managed to stay in power and to be central to all areas for long periods of time, Istanbul is a world capital of the past.
