L‘organo e uno strumento a una o più tastiere, tuttora presente nelle chiese e nelle cattedrali e impiegato per l' accompagnamento musicale delle funzioni religiose se. È detto “ii re degli strumenti” , per le dimensioni grandiose, la varietà e l' estensione dei suoni (alcuni possono superare le dieci ottave). L’organo e fornito di numerose canne , diverse per altezza e diametro , e il suono è prodotto dall’ aria spinta in esse abbassando i tasti (con la tastiera) o i pedali (con la pedaliera) . Le canne, a seconda delle dimensioni , producono suoni di diversa altezza e , azionando una serie di meccanismi detti registri , anche di diverso timbro. in questo modo è possibile produrre una vera e propria “sin-fonia” di suoni.
