I've been a web developer for a few years, more or less falling into it by accident. It's good, interesting work and it mostly keeps me busy. The money tends to be better than average too (WAY better than when I worked in factories). But I've been a writer since I was old enough to hold a pen. Yes, that was back in the dark ages when computers were rare, horribly expensive, and did not fit nicely in your lap like the one I'm using now.
So recently, when I was between jobs, I did a lot more writing than I have for a long time. I actually resented the first few weeks back at work because it took time away from the writing I wanted to do the things I had started and now might never finish (Now I resent it for entirely different reasons). This is all a long way of saying that I'm a frustrated writer with lots of pent up stories to tell. Those are mostly told through poetry. Science fiction poetry. Also fantasy, horror and even some noir poetry, because that's MUCH more interesting than writing about my own ups and downs, pretensions and emotional failures.
This is my picture of future retirement: Sitting in a lawn chair on the beach, with a full beer at my right hand and a laptop (with a really good battery) where I can hammer out poetry, all day, every day. Just to amuse myself.
I like that plan, it reminds me of the lyrics to Knee Deep by Zak Brown Band.
Gonna put the world away for a minute
Pretend I don't live in it
Sunshine gonna wash my blues away
Had sweet love but I lost it
She got too close so I fought it
Now I'm lost in the world tryin' to find me a better way
Wishin' I was
Knee deep in the water somewhere
Got the blue sky, breeze and it don't seem fair
The only worry in the world
Is the tide gonna reach my chair
Sunrise, there's a fire in the sky
Never been so happy
Never felt so high
And I think I might have found me my own kind of paradise
Wrote a note, said "Be back in a minute"
Bought a boat and I sailed off in it
Don't think anybody's gonna miss me anyway
Mind on a permanent vacation
The ocean is my only medication
Wishin' my condition ain't ever gonna go away
Ahhhh....to suck out the marrow life! "Pass us a beer will ya!" CHEERS!
