Short Summary

Hey there, Steemit! My name is Kyle and I am a 16 year old Computer Science, Mathematics, Classics and History A-Level college student from England. I have been wanting to post on here for a while now but I have been so busy with exams that I haven’t been able to. But no longer! I have been enjoying the brilliant content of this brilliant community for a while now and I have decided that the least I can do is try my best to contribute to it myself :)

My Hobbies

I have a wide variety of hobbies but the main ones are:

  • Programming – I am currently learning C, C++ and a bit of Python here and there. I love talking about it and learning all sorts of tips and tricks from people as well as teaching what I know and helping other people out: so feel free to talk to me about anything programming :D

  • Bushcraft – this is the learning of skills needed to coexist with nature and survive in the wilderness the way our ancestors used to. It feels great to get up at 5AM and watch the sun rising from the top of a wooded hill and witnessing the forest slowly come alive with birds and other animals. Again, feel free anytime to talk to me about bushcraft, I love meeting new people

  • Reading – my favourite author is without a doubt J.R.R Tolkien. My favourite book is the Silmarillion, funnily enough, by J.R.R Tolkien. There’s are so many things about the way Tolkien writes and how he structures his stories that really make me look inward and reflect on life. I could honestly go on about Tolkien for many more paragraphs but I shall stop now and save it for my upcoming Tolkien blog where I examine and look in-depth at many of his works. Despite my obsession with Tolkien, I do like other authors as well. I’m a big Game of Thrones fan (G.R.R Martin) and a big fan of classical Greek and Roman literature such as the Iliad (Homer) and the Aeneid (Virgil). You’re probably tired of hearing this now but feel free to talk to me about it! :)

Why I have jointed Steemit

I have been in a few online communities (primarily reddit and a few facebook groups) and have not overly enjoyed the experience. This is because of the overall negativity of the community (in my experience). I’m sure there are many brilliant and nice people on Reddit but in the places I was posting and contributing nobody was nice to each other (to put it lightly). But from what I have seen on Steemit, the community is awesome. Never before have I found a community where people genuinely respect each other and thoughtfully engage with other people’s content like Steemit does. I love it and it’s absolutely beautiful to see such a community in this day of widespread online trolling. Like I said previously, I have taken much enjoyment from reading other people’s content on here and I’d like to contribute in my own way to give back to the community.
I constantly ask the question to myself: ‘if we are all human beings why can’t we all give each other the respect and compassion we deserve?’ And Steemit is the first community I have found where people are like this. We all have limited time on this Earth and I’d like to spend it loving rather than hating.

What I am going to be doing on Steemit

I am going to doing a variety of different things on Steemit. Upon occasion I shall be just blogging about life as a teenage college student growing up in rural England but my main continuous projects are going to be:

  • A Programming blog in which I document my learning process and new things that I learn. Hopefully this will help to teach other people who are interested in the subject but don’t overly know how to start without ‘jumping in the deep end’.

  • A blog examining and explaining certain aspects of the works of J.R.R Tolkien and teaching people who may have only seen the movies cool things about the mythology that will enrich their movie experience without having to read the books themselves (although I’d highly recommend it!)

  • A blog documenting my experiences in the world of Bushcraft and showcasing new skills that I learn and helping other people to achieve the same things if they are interested in nature.

My Hopes and Dreams for the Future

Since a young age I have loved the outdoors and the culture of Native Americans and other tribal peoples. As such, for the last few years I have practiced bushcraft to keep in touch with my base human instinct; to try and live life in its fullest and barest form where I need only focus on the necessities.
However, I one day hope to take it to more than a hobby. I want to live the life. I plan on going to university after finishing my A-Levels and getting a degree in Computer Science or History. I have not decided which because I love both fields a lot. I probably enjoy history a bit more but computer science will pay a lot, lot more. I hate the effect money has on people in this world but sadly I shall need money to achieve my dream. I would like to move to a country such as Finland or Sweden and buy a few acres of woods; and simply live a life attuned to nature. I would be completely relying on the land and resources around me as well as my skills to harness and use them. Such a life would be devoid of the luxury pleasures that we surround ourselves with today but I don’t much care. If I had the choice between living 100 years sat on my bottom, doing nothing but becoming unfit and never really achieving anything life, and living only 20 years to life’s fullest, living on the edge in the wilderness I would choose the wilderness with no delay. I would rather live 20 years as a lion than 100 years as a goat.

To sum up this lengthy paragraph I would like to live in a lovely forested area in a Nordic country one day: not caring for the troubles of modern urban life. My dream may be unrealistic (as I have been told) but hey, I’m 16, if there’s a time to be unrealistic it’s now :)

Feel free to follow me for some upcoming content about the aforementioned things but that’s pretty much all there is to me, Steemit, I hope you enjoy my content as I have thoroughly enjoyed others’ and I wish everyone a brilliant day!

You seem like a very impressive guy. Bushcraft is cool. I've done a lot of that training as a prepper. www.brokeprepper.com is my book series. I too am a fan of classic greek and roman literature and plays. We have a lot in common and I look forward to see the stuff you post. Good luck, man and thanks for following me. I appreciate the support.

Awesome! I'm planning on getting into prepping once I become financially secure (tuition fees even with scholarship means I'm pretty strapped for cash for the next few years) but I shall do my best. No worries, my friend, and thank you so much :)

Hey, welcome :) I like programming too, and I want to start a blog about it too. I'm new to steemit too and it's been difficult to find people who write about this topic. I'm waiting to see all the good content you can share with with community. If you're interested, you can check my profile. I'll be posting about programming, web development, tools in general, etc. Cheers from Venezuela!

Thank you, my friend :) I shall do :D

Hi Kyle,

Welcome to Steemit. I'm interested in all three of the main topics that you plan to write about... so I followed you.

I am often surprised at just how good the writing is when I read a chapter of the Hobbit to my children. We read it often, as they have their favorite chapters that we go over again and again.

Good to have you hear and I look forward to reading more of your writing.

That means a lot, thank you very much :) I too am surprised and I've read almost every piece of literature released under the man's name. You're fighting the good fight though by reading the Hobbit to your children, it's the best children's (and adult) book out there. Thank you for the excellent reply though, my friend: have a nice day

Brilliant post.

Welcome!
