My account was just approved yesterday, and I am very excited to join this community. Yesterday I spent some time reading about the platform and commenting on posts that I thoroughly enjoyed, so I thought I’d continue today with the obligatory introductory post, so here it goes:
I work as a creative services manager for a university, which is actually my dream job. My role spans the spectrum between left-brain and right-brain tasks, so I rarely ever get bored. I do everything from project management and web development to graphic design and photography. I come to work and have a great time.
My hobbies outside of work include healthy cooking, the visual arts, and creative writing. I have a MFA in Creative Writing from Southern Illinois University, and I will admit that even though I have a great job, I have struggled to find direction in my writing since leaving my graduate program. Recently, though, I re-discovered Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. The exercises in the book provided some necessary guidance, and I am happily writing screenplays again.
To the Steemit community, I plan to contribute articles on writing, posts that include gluten-free recipes, and a few posts where I share my visual art. I will add that I am inspired by those of you here who are sharing your artwork. I didn’t think I’d find a community of artists online who upvote each other’s work! To me, that is amazing. We are creating a world where visual artists can get paid for making something that is aesthetically pleasing and for providing lessons that allow others to do the same.
Once the ground thaws, I will also start planting basil. My husband and I typically grow four large plants, and I spend most of my time outside of work during the summer making pesto. Here is a photo of the basil just before our big harvest. For reference, I am 5’ 3”, and the tallest basil plants came up to my shoulder. I freeze some of the pesto, but I give most of it away. There is little else that brings me more joy than when I see people enjoying food I’ve prepared, and I look forward to sharing my biggest crowd pleasers with the Steemit community.
Congress dear...Welcome to our steemit family
Thank you! I'm happy to be here.
Welcome to steemit! You seem like a positive and interesting individual. :) That's cool you have your own garden and are focused on healthy cooking. That's important in life! Writing is also super important in my opinion, sounds like you're pretty well rounded!
Hope you do well on here and if you have any questions about the platform feel free to ask, I've been on here for a while so I might be able to help.. Anyways.. Cheers and good luck! :D
Hi @apolymask, Thank you for the kind words and for re-steeming my post. Very kind of you. I also appreciate the invitation to reach out with questions. Steemit is a great platform, though it takes time to learn the ins and outs. I'm sure it comes in time. You have a great blog, and I'm now happily following your feed. Thanks again for taking the time to respond and to re-steem. There are a lot of great people here who are willing to bring newbies along. That's wonderful to see.
You're welcome! Happy to help. :) It is and it can be daunting at first, I've had a number of friends and family have difficulty with it, so I understand. However. I think if you take the time to learn how to do it can be extremely rewarding! In my opinion more rewarding than any other social media, however there are a few others sprouting up that are trying to offer similar things, so maybe in time one of these other ones will be good too. I need to research them more. Though steemit does seem to be pretty solid for the time being based on my understanding of things! We're still in beta and there's a lot of amazing metrics to show it's success.
Thanks for the nice words and the follow! You may want to look into the contest I host called the IFC or Information Finding Championship, it's pretty helpful for newcomers to get started and maybe earn some extra funds and followers!
And yes, there are a lot of great people here! Through the game I made I've met quite a few amazing people, and met quite a few before that, but particularly recently the people at @newbieresteemday and @newbiegames are really awesome when it comes to helping the beginners out! So I suggest looking up those tags as well if you want some additional help and opportunities! :D
Cheers and good luck on here! :)
Thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely check out those feeds. I appreciate the advice :) I love the whole concept behind Steemit and definitely think they're onto something. It will be so interesting to see how this all transpires. I will check out your contest as well. Thanks again~
You're welcome! :) And yeah, it's been a great place since I joined in my opinion.. Only encountered a few jerks compared to like millions on other social media, but.. More and more recently I'm getting deeper into this community and it's even a lot deeper than I thought it was!
Also cool to hear you'll check out the contest! :) Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need a link or anything? Umm.. I'll just give you the link for the recent updated rules post, and then if you want to play we can go from there!

Welcome to Steemit!I upvoted and followed. I am also new here. I'm excited to just write again. I miss that about school. While I write for work, it is completely devoid of creativity. I need this!
Thanks @robmolecule! I followed you back. Us newbies need to stick together :) I'm glad you are finding some fulfillment here, too.
Laura, I'm Oatmeal Joey Arnold, and welcome, and love your photo and your smile and cooking can be awesome. I have a garden. Do you have a garden? Are you related to Walter White? Just kidding haha. But you know that show, Breaking Bad had that character. Great show.
Nice to meet you! I live in a city, so my garden is small. We grow basil (obviously!), some lettuce plants, and whatever other herbs strike our fancy. Re: Breaking Bad, I might be the only person on the planet who hasn't seen that show. I tried watching the pilot, and for some reason, it just didn't grab me. Maybe I'll give it another try because I like Bryan Cranston, the actor. To answer your last question, no, I am not related to Walter White or any other character on Breaking Bad, for that matter. j/k Thanks for taking the time to leave a response -- I look forward to seeing you around Steemit!
Always good to have gardens. My favorite food to eat might be potatoes. And I eat garlic because it is so healthy. Breaking Bad is kind of boring until maybe season four or five. It builds up. It has a pretty awesome and crazy and kind of sad story that is shocking and fun and crazy and awesome to see full of twists kind of like Dexter Morgan, the wannabe Batman by night and Miami Blood Inspector by day. And I love Walking Dead and Game of Thrones too. So, Breaking Bad is pretty focused on just on character like Dexter unlike the Walking Dead in some ways.
Great to know -- thanks. Maybe I will give Breaking Bad another try. Mad Men was another that I just couldn't get into for some reason, and I had worked in the ad industry for nine years. Go figure.
Never got into Mad Men either. Sometimes, I watch things if they're popular so I can know what people are talking about and I want to be able to comment on some of it but we might be better off if we are not watching some things maybe if they're too depressing or something. And Facebook is making people suicidal. We live like in the Matrix or Wall-E world. I don't want to survive, I want to live.
welcome! Im glad youve decided to joined the party!
Long live and prosper.
Thank you!
Hi welcome, beautiful photo.
You must be somewhere warm, still lots of snow here!
Thank you! Actually, that photo was taken last summer. We still have a little snow on the ground, but probably not as much as you have in Montreal. I usually start planting the first week in June -- at that point the frost is no longer a threat. Nice to see that there are devs here -- I look forward to following your posts.
I was once in Montreal and Quebec City in 2006 and had Escarto, or how do I say and write snail?
Looking forward to seeing some gluten-free recipes.
Thanks! I’m working on a post for tomorrow.
That basil is huge!! I have never seen such a majestic basil before.
If I may suggest, check out some of the creative writing and fiction blogs on Steemit, there is a lot of really cool stuff going on in regards to story-telling and writing.
I hope that you can find enjoyment and success on the platform! I love the connections Steemit has helped me make, and it has introduced me to a lot of awesome new things. Steemit is the new wave, and we're surfin' it. Stay happy and stay steeming!
Thank you! I cannot take credit for growing it. That's my husband's department. He studied horticulture for a few years. I will definitely check out the writing and fiction blogs on Steemit. It all sounds wonderful. Thank you for your well wishes, too -- great to know you're getting acquainted to new things here. Best wishes to you, too.
Welcome! Just off the top of my head I can think of a few places where you might find some more things to get involved in on Steemit. There's @isleofwrite and @moneyinfant's list of writing contests depending on whether you want to mingle, share or earn some Steem. The @steemartists is relatively new and very active, you'll have fun getting to know all the great artists from all around the world.
But for someone who has an interest in a bit of everything this place just feels like a playground!
Wonderful! I will check out the blogs that you mentioned. I really appreciate the suggestions. Many thanks!
Welcome to Steemit Laura! :)
I reeealy love basil, and your plants are wonderful! We also plant it behind our house, but we don't get so big plants. :)
Thank you! I'm excited to be here. Admittedly, my husband is the one with the green thumb :) I cook the pesto and maintain the basil plants, but he choose the fertilizer and creates a makeshift irrigation system on hot days. It can be tough to get it to grow right, so I'll be more observant of his practices this year and share some tips. Thanks for taking the time to write!
No problem. :) Looking forward to more stuff from you!
Welcome Laura :)
Thank you @harj! I'm happy to be here and enjoying the community so far.
