As a young boy Kago had been a straight A student.Good grades were his happy drug and nothing meant more to him. He would swagger around school with his head up high basking in the glory and fame of being at the top of the food chain. Every day at dawn with the rooster crowing he would start pressing his school shirt and polishing his black shoes until he could see his reflection on them. After all he was the best and had to look sharp . he would look at himself in the mirror and check if his black african hair was combed and shiny too.
this fairy tale came crushing down when the results of his college final exams were released. His total grades had been one point shy away from getting him a scholarship to study abroad in the UK. That had been his bull's eye all along. The fact that he had gotten so close to his goal is what hurt him the most. For the first time in his life he felt like a failure. he had not only failed himself but everyone else. all his teachers had been sure prior to writing to the exams that Kago already had a plane ticket and waiting for the results was merely a formality but as life would have it that never happened. All of his glory had now evaporated and his world that was once so bright now seemed dark and gloomy. he found himself lost, depressed and in agony .It broke his mother's heat into tiny pieces to see her soon so defeated with watery eyes. The root of his pain was that he had concluded that studying abroad in the UK would guarantee him a high paying job when he returned to his home country Botswana.Naturally this humble boy loved taking care of his family. He had witnessed the harassment incurred by his mother at the hands of the snakes whom she owed money to.They would budge into the house and demand their money, others would call her over and over they whole day and one man had even gone to the extent of confiscating her phone until payment was made. The grass wasn't greener on his father end either. The poor man had to work two jobs to keep the family afloat. in the morning he would work as a handy man fixing people's leaking taps and in the evening he would work as chauffeur for a small time transport company. even a blind person could see just how much he was burning the candle at both ends. So nope
Kago's thirst for money wasn't from a place of greed but from a place of love for his parents who were growing old each day and burdened by financial woes.
A few days had passed after his bubble had burst. He was still mopping in bed in his pajamas on a hot sunny day with windows and curtains shut. there he was in his dark room engulfed in a stench from skipping too many showers. While still swimming in his ocean of misery there had been a phrase that had never seized to echo in his mind *life is not fair*
these words remained imprisoned in his head until finally he bolted out of his bed. An incredible idea had just gave him hope. It was like he had been electrocuted back to life. What was this idea ? it was simply a notion that since life had robbed him, he too was going to rob it. if life could rob, then it could be robbed
that was now his motto.......
"Snakes to whom she owed money"
Usually when you owe money, it is because you received something which you now owe for.
So these "Snakes" gave her goods or services, on credit. Services she needed or desired. Now they want to get paid so they are "snakes".
I will bet you didn't call them "snakes" when you were getting their goods and services on credit.
the whole point of the series is to interact with the reader on an emotional level glad that happened . thanks for reading :)
There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.
