3 tips on how to be a good Magician (or anything in life) - by Eddie the Magic Monk

in #introduceyourself8 years ago (edited)

Hey guys, it's Eddie the Magic monk. Today I'm going to teach you how to be a good magician. This may just turn out to to be how to be good at anything, but I'll use performing magic as an example.

1: Ignore people who say "you're bad"

So many people have told me "you're crap at this". Guess what, these are usually the same people who don't know anything about magic. Why? Because people who do magic will be able to give you more specific feedback than that. Something like "Maybe you should say this at the beginning" or "maybe you could tilt your hand that way so the audience can't see this". Simply saying "you're crap" is a put down that you will have to learn to forget.

2: Perform as often as possible

Practicing by yourself is great but only through constant performance in front of people, you will gain more experience and get better at "distracting" the audience or making the trick sound real. You can see the difference between when i did my first magic video 3 and a half years ago years ago to now, the audience is a lot more impressed by my tricks. Have my tricks gotten more complicated? No. I'm just better at making them look better. The build up of confidence after many performances also makes a huge difference.

3: Never stop learning

I'm always looking at other people's tricks and trying to learn new tricks. You never know when an idea will pop up in your head to change up an existing trick to come up with a new trick. Even just performing an old trick by saying something different, changing the sequence or using another angle, you could make a trick look entirely different.

Hope this helps. Have fun!
