Supportive, enthusiastic, insightful commenting is usually the best way to get some traction and start building a following.
Pick a few relevant tags and read what interests you.
You'll pick up some great formatting/layout ideas and make some friends with mutual interests.
If you focus on blogging to build your audience you risk burning out.
(It's demoralising to spend hours on a post, only to watch it be enthusiastically upvoted by both of the people who read it.)
