Introducing Biotechnology in Steemit! - Easily explained biotechnology topics

in #introduceyourself8 years ago (edited)

Dear people from Steemit, I am here to bring you Biotechnology! …Or rather knowledge about biotechnology. But still, BIOTECHNOLOGY - deep voice accompanied with background drums.

Let me make some guesses: If I say glucose, lipids & protein you think about a balanced diet. If I say DNA, you know it is kind of important but not sure exactly what it is. I insist with GMO and then you get critical. Renewable energies? Solar panels. Vaccines? For protection against…stuff. Evolution? From monkeys to humans. And I finally say Biotechnology? Now you are probably thinking about creating deadly viruses and cloning sheep, but actually biotechnology is related to all the topics above and a lot more. Yogurt, beer, antibiotics, cosmetics, food additives, cleaning water, nanotechnology, illnesses detection, cancer… You get it.

My humble opinion (maybe not always so humble but I try) is that most people stop learning about biology too early in their lives. Then their opinions about controversial topics such as GMO, vaccines or antibiotics can be too easily manipulated by the media.

For example, I have actually seen TV ads showing skin-products with snail DNA. WHAT? Yes, snail DNA. My goal is that you are able to understand why this is total bu*****t.

The presence of bio-related products has increased exponentially since 1950 and most people have not event realized. Thus, I think it is very important for people to have a good background in biotechnology in order to understand the impact that biotechnological products can have on us and the impact that we have on the world.

My goal is to start a blog to help people gain knowledge about the basics of biology so we can all together discuss more controversial topics such as GMOs or cancer research. Later on, start talking about the latest biotech startups and the bio-alternatives that already exist to many chemical processes. In short, bring awareness of what biotechnology can do!

Yeah, yeah..awesome but why should we trust you among all others? You should NOT. First rule in the world of science: DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING. Second rule in the world of science: DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING. Therefore, I will try to reference any important conclusions to peer-reviewed and officially published articles (1).

A bit about me. I did my bachelor in Biotechnology in Spain and I am currently doing a Master’s Degree in Biochemical engineering in TU Delft, in the Netherlands. I love reading, mainly fantasy, science fiction and historical novels. However, two years ago I also started reading about personal development, finances, investing and entrepreneurship. I am really passionate about entrepreneurship and always looking for a challenge to take on. I also love to travel backpacking and sailing. And dogs, definitely dogs. All of them. Yes.

A final word. I intend to be as close as possible to people reading this, to make them participate and really get into biotech. So, if you have any doubts, questions, criticism or topics in mind… say it in the comments and I will try to make a post about it. Check out my first post about DNA!

1 – An absolutely trustable information source. Definetely not the first webpage I found on google. Actual science text books and cool science articles.
