Does anyone have a copy of Photography for Dummies I can borrow?

Hello Steemians! My name is Missy, and I've been on Steemit for about a month. I've really enjoyed getting to know the growing community, and I'm impressed with the quality of content the Steemit community creates daily.

Content creation isn't easy. In fact, it can be quite difficult. It may look like anyone with a webcam can become YouTube famous, but there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes. And, of course, it helps to have talent. So to those of you who are consistently creating quality content, thank you. I would like to join your ranks eventually!

A little about me...

IMG_2339.JPG (I'm the chibi Avacyn on the left)I'm a disabled veteran who connects with the world through gaming, especially Magic: the Gathering. I'm a member of a Magic social commentary themed podcast called Direct Damage West Coast (We're NSFW/not kid-friendly on the cast, but you can find us here http://mtgcast.com/author/direct_damage)

I also crack packs on YouTube (you can find me there as MTGmisfit), but most of my video content has been live streamed. Since joining the podcast last year, I've upgraded my computer system, bought a nice mic, and invested in a couple of webcams that theoretically get the job done. I even have professional lighting, tripods, and a green screen. It's been quite an investment.

I'd hoped to eventually start editing my streams and then move into "real" video production, but the video quality wasn't worth investing that much time and energy...despite the considerable financial input on my part. It was time to poo or get off the pot, as they say.

So, I bought a digital SLR camera yesterday, with all the bells and whistles. I don't have a capture card, so I'll only be using it for edited footage and still shots for now. Assuming I figure out how this thing works! It's a Nikon D3400 and it came with two lenses, which I thought was a pretty good deal for $499 (on sale at Best Buy if you're in the market for one).

I see a lot of great photographs on the feed, and it's awesome that there's so much talent on Steemit. I'd love to connect with other photographers and streamers here, so please say hi in the comments. Upvotes and resteems are very much appreciated, so thanks in advance for helping me grow my network.

(To be quite honest, I'm happy to connect with anyone on here...so let me know if you follow me in the comments and I'll be sure to follow you back)

Camera wise, best way to learn is to read about the exposure triangle.

Really old books on photography have good information on this, second hand book stores are an awesome place for such treasures.

Nice find on the camera for sale. Im going to have to download the podcasts and check you guys out. I'm always looking for something good to listen to.

Still haven't cracked open my card binders to see if I have anything worthwhile, turns out newborns are both demanding and adorable.

I usually fumble with cards when we're watching Netflix. It serves the same purpose of a fidget spinner, but makes me money/store credit for new cards. Just sent off a flat rate box of uncommons and commons for $350! Hoping to get good enough with the new camera to vlog about my method.

Sweet! And if you record the method definitely post it! I havent touched these things since early high school in the late nineties.

As @holoz0r wrote above it's about understanding the connection between aperture - depth of field - shutter time etc.

But another important thing is learning about how to construct an image - my advice is to look at paintings, movie stills, drawings... all kinds of 2d art that is not photography. You will see clearer how to distribute light and darkness, how to compose with balance, and the dynamics of colours that way.

I follow you also to see something about Magic. My brother introduced it to my daughter and my nephews so I have been playing it quite some times :)

Thank you! My mom was a professional photographer back in the day of film photography, but my mind has problems translating those same concepts into digital...just seems like it would work differently being different technology, but from what I can tell so far, it's pretty much the same.

Thanks for the follow, and I've followed you back. Happy to hear you're playing Magic with your family. It's a great game!

Just learn the basics.

Shutter Speed

Aperture

ISO/Film Speed

Once you know what those things are and what they do and how to manipulate them, photography will be wide open for you. It's othello: a minute to learn and a lifetime to master. Good luck!

Welcome to Steemit! :)

Congrats on your new camera!

Nice camera! I'm looking forward to seeing your photographs. Most importantly, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!! Followed and resteemed from Texas!

I am also in Texas! And thanks for the thanks...it was the best job I ever had and I miss it every day :)
