Hey Steemit!
After browsing Reddit for years and enjoying those posts on a daily basis, I finally decided to get involved in posting content, but I thought that the Steemit community was a great up and coming place to start and for me a better option.
My name is Scott and I am a 31 year-old teacher from America. I am married to an amazing woman and we have a beautiful 18 month-old boy. Growing up, I was never big on the whole school thing. Grades weren't really important to me and I was there to get through it and move on to the next stage in my life. I thought that there had to be a way to make learning fun again and an experience that people like me would enjoy more. I decided to study to be a teacher and made the decision to head off to South Africa to get some global perspective.
As someone who had never been outside of the states before (not even on one of those wonderful Caribbean vacations), it was quite the culture shock. Over the next few months, I did and saw things that I never would have expected myself to experience. I saw poverty on a scale that I had trouble understanding and wealth and power that I could only dream about. It was a humbling experience for me in many ways. I was able to travel the country while I was there and swam with great white sharks, went on safari, visited elephant and crocodile sanctuaries, biked through the wine country, and camped a lot.
My hike to the the tip of Africa.
Getting a little love from a rescued elephant.
When I got back stateside, I wanted to find a way to help kids learn to not take the opportunities they are given for granted. I am a huge gamer and grew up playing video games pretty much everyday with my brothers. To this day, I still look forward to getting lost in video games and I look forward to the day when I can share that passion with my kids. I began to think of ways that I could help my students become engaged and motivated in the classroom by incorporating gaming and gaming elements into their lessons.
The most important thing for my students that they learn to love learning and get excited to come to school. So far so good!
That about wraps it up for my introduction everyone! I have a lot more to share about gaming and teaching and some of the crazy things that have happened to me along the way. I look forward to connecting with some great people here and learning a lot more about new topics!
Enjoying the views of Table Mountain in Cape Town.
