Introducing Spokane Center for Independent Living

in #introduceyourself8 years ago

We would like to take the opportunity to introduce our organization to the Steemit community. The following are a couple of photographs of some of our staff. In at least one photo you will see @r2cornell taking the pictures.

Spokane Center for Independent Living (SCIL) is a consumer driven, 501 (c) (3) non-profit Independent Living Center providing services to meet the needs of the Spokane, WA area disability community. SCIL provides a comprehensive range of services designed to educate, assist, empower and provide resources to the cross-disability community. Our goal is to empower them to make decisions to live independently.

Independent Living (IL) is based on the philosophy that people with disabilities have skills, determination, specific abilities, creativity, and a passion for life. However, many are unable to participate fully due to attitudinal and/or physical barriers in our community. IL is a "way of living" for people with disabilities who live in our communities where many barriers remain.

Independent Living becomes a reality for people with disabilities through the support offered by Center's for Independent Living (CILs) throughout the State of Washington, and throughout the rest of the USA. Our director responded to a comment on one of our previous posts as follows: "Thank you for the kind words! There are Centers for Indepenndent Living (CIL's) worldwide. I don't know of a world-wide listing, but for a complete list of all the CIL's in the U.S. visit here:
http://www.ilru.org/projects/cil-net/cil-center-and-association-directory"

Services include:

Advocacy
Independent Living Skills Training
Information & Referral
Peer Support
Youth & Adult Transition
Housing Search Assistance
And many more

We are hoping to be able to post articles on issues related to Independent Living and disabilities, as a means educating others.

In the past poor management made many mistakes which which has caused financial problems for us. Our current director and staff are working hard to pay down debt that accumulated from those past mistakes. We are dedicated to continue rebuilding programs, getting debt paid off, and adding new programs that will offer new revenue streams.

We are small non-profit organization, and as many non-profits dependent on grants (including government grants), and donations. We do some fee for services, and are trying to build more in this area.

Our number one goal is to continue providing services to the disabled in our community. We are hoping that Steemit can provide an outlet to educate others, and to get the word out on what the Independent Living movement is all about.

Our bylaws mandate that over 50% of our staff and board of directors have a disability. We typically are well above that percentage.

I have worked part time at SCILWA for the past two years. I have worked with people with disabilities for well over 35 years and have been impressed with the services offered and the dedication staff and management in providing Independent Living Services.

Many of us with disabilities did not have these kinds of services and supports in our early years. We had to find our way on our own. What SCILWA offers is so very important to those of all ages who have a disability. Their goal is to be as independent as possible so they can add to society.
