I'm Sheridan Green, computational astrophysicist @ Yale interested in intersections of science, CS, tech, and finance

Hi there! My name is Sheridan Green, and I spend most of my time studying gigantic computer simulations of the Universe, teaching physics lab, working on physics coursework, or getting destroyed on Fortnite Battle Royale. Originally from the US south, I recently graduated from the lovely University of North Carolina with a degree in physics and math and started a new, exciting phase of life as a physics graduate student at Yale University in Connecticut.

I moved to Connecticut with my wife, April, who is studying to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. Together, we are enjoying living our luxurious lives as two university students. We hope to eventually complete our nuclear family unit through the acquisition of one canine pup, ideally a sweet lil' ol' boxer-pit mix.

So, as I mentioned, I run computer simulations of the Universe. The mysteries of dark matter and dark energy have always been really exciting to me, and I was fortunate enough to get involved in astrophysics research while I was at UNC. Since I was a junior, I've been trying to figure out the implications that the clumping of dark matter on sub-galactic scales can have on dark matter detection through gamma-ray space telescopes. We've been interested in seeing how different conditions of the early Universe impact the formation of dark matter structure at later times. I've written an honors thesis on this stuff. The gif below looks at the same point in space evolving in time with two different early Universe evolution histories.

I managed to get into this field of research because I was interested in space but also loved computers and programming. As adulthood has settled in and I've been started thinking about my long-term financial health, I've also started to get really interested in finance. As it turns out, physicists tend to be well-prepared for careers in finance due to a lifelong focus on quantitative problem solving. With this amazing cryptocurrency explosion currently happening and larger financial institutions finally starting to get involved, I'm starting to seriously watch potential opportunities in the crypto-finance world over the next few years as I complete my PhD. Also, as a scientist, I'm interested in the potential impacts that blockchain technology and similar developments may have on new means of funding scientific endeavors as well as on opening up and decentralizing the peer-reviewed scientific journal process.

I've been meaning to get into blogging for a while, and steemit looks like a fantastic place to finally get started since it provides this really cool platform that merges social media and cryptocurrency/blockchain technology. I plan to talk about my experiences with astrophysics and the scientific process, and as I begin to learn more about computational/quantitative finance and cryptocurrency, I hope to share my thoughts (first thought: I'm currently bullish on XLM, but we'll see how that goes). For the more technically-oriented, I may occasionally talk about programming/statistics/data analysis topics.

You may be thinking, "But Sheridan, surely you don't just work on physics and think about science and finance all day!" And you would be right. I also love music, memes, and playing video games like a total casual. I'm really into lofi hip-hop and downtempo electronica. Some faves are Jon Hopkins, Ulrich Schnauss, and Boards of Canada, as well as anything that shows up on stations like this one on YouTube. I've been trying to re-live the old days and get into anime, and so far I've loved the rites of passage, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. I'm a big fan of listening to Northernlion's ridiculous banter on YouTube, and have recently gotten into podcasts, such as Your Kickstarter Sucks. I'm excited about becoming a part of the steemit community and hope to start getting into a regular posting routine as I start developing my skills in conveying the more interesting bits of my internal thoughts to the outside world in as cohesive a way as possible.

Until next time!
SBG

Very impressive I guess what you are doing is very hard but since that is your passion it is just easy for you. I salute you for that and welcome to steemit =)

wow, impresionante! welcome! ;)

Welcome to Steemit, we hope to learn from your knowledge!

Welcome to the community! Amazing time to be here, keep it good and check out my blog to stay in touch ; )
