Hello Steemit
Every writer or creative person knows that eventually they have to break out of their self imposed silence that they hide in during the early years of their work. There's only so long you can spend constantly excusing yourself by pretending that you're locked in wonderful solo improvement phase (despite the lack of feedback and critique,) or perhaps it's because you're always telling yourself that you're simply not ready, (after all, it's easier to take failure from yourself than from others right?) Somewhere in the fog, the reality is that revealing your creativity makes you feel awfully exposed, as if you've invited the world into your own soul, complete with a guided tour of all your worst parts.(My soul, as you'll find out, is apparently full of typos.)
Whatever the reason, its probably not good enough, it probably never was. You're almost certainly not ready, you haven't been and you won't be anytime soon. But, as I like to think, you don't have to be ready to start.
Which bring me to Steemit. I've been looking for a place like this for a while. It's far away from Facebook that I won't be embarrassed by my mum but it's real enough that I can show my face. It's system means that I'm less likely to be compared to Hitler like in youtube, or have my posts be buried in a sea of reposted memes a la reddit. Perhaps the money will ruin the concept, but at least it gives people an incentive, and the quality seems to be good.
That's me in the middle by the way, at a friends wedding. I was best man, at some point I'll point out a few tips. (Making commitments is the best way to follow yourself up I find.)
So I'll be mainly using this as an outlet for my writing. I primarily write short stories with occasional flash fiction, (a product of my short attention span,) which spans a range of genres, but it usually based in the real world with dabbles of surrealism, sci-fi and fantasy. Common themes include human behavior and that manifests itself into the setting, often into dystopia. My biggest influences are probably Neil Gaiman and Haruki Murakami. If you know those two you might have an idea of how I write. I like to experiment with different styles as well, to keep things fresh. (You have my permission to skip the comedy pieces...)
Inconveniently I'm not just a writer. Real life has decided I'm grounded for the time being. So I'll be interspersing these posts with anecdotes, stories about my life, ambitions, travelling and so on and so forth. Speaking of which, if anybody is in Peru, I really must recommend going to the Colca Canyon. I'm a city boy, but I have a newfound love for nature after that trek. It's the best piece of natural beauty I've ever seen. (I'll mention this place again.)
Besides my stories, fiction or otherwise, I want to talk about life. The big questions, and the small ones too. Like most people when they're young, I'm still trying to work it out. I am unsure, but I'm willing to talk about it and to learn, and hopefully I can even impart something to others. As the title says, I'm going to crowdsource my soulsearching.
Thanks :)
Yiyu
