A good front end is Busy.org. That has some features not on Steemit.com. Most people use both.
A good way to ignore the promotion and spam is to check out @trufflepig. It's a bot that generates a trending page without paid promotion or circular upvoting.
Another helpful tool for people new on the platform to have their content seen is by other new posters is . Seems better than bid bots. () Basically another trending page for new users.
Careful with some of the links in comments. There's been a lot of phishing spam lately.
