This Is My Introduction! I'm a Beginning Writer and an Avid Fan of RPG Mechanics

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

How to begin introductions...be it a novel or RPG manual (both of which I've attempted multiple times) the introduction is almost always the hardest part for me. Generally in a novel I'd like to start with something dramatic, like giving a reader a taste of the middle of a story or even a question that keeps them digging for something more. If this were an RPG manual I was writing maybe I'd go with a short story showcasing how the system would work, like a snippet of a play session I had run before.

But with an introduction about me? There's stories to be had, but none so impressing as the imaginations that an experienced and articulate writer or a skillful artist can master. So I guess I'll just share a few tidbits of information about who I am, why I came here and what I plan to do.

As I said in the introduction: I'm a beginning writer and an avid fan of RPG mechanics. I've been hooked on writing since the first day I started writing a story and found I had a knack for it. The story was compelling enough when my friend first read it that it got me excited. Then that same friend introduced me to a pen and paper RPG game he was participating in. I went in thinking how nerdy or geeky it was and by the end of it I wanted to play so badly that the next session I had a sheet all drawn up and ready to go.

That being said, I've never published a book despite having a rough draft of 100,000 word novel. I've written several custom RPG manuals but I can never decide on a final system. I've never taken anything to full completion Why? I'm a bit of a perfectionist and a little OCD to boot. If things don't fit well I just toss aside.

One of the reasons why I came here was to practice my craft and hopefully gain insight about my writing style. I'd love to hear what things catch an audiences interest or what turns them away. I also wouldn't mind associating with people of like minds. Lastly, I've run into a sort of...low point...in my life. One of the quotes I've heard that I've taken to heart is this: Madness is doing the same thing over and over again expecting the same results. Blogging may be something to help expand myself -- so this is my attempt.

I know in the title I said I'm a beginning writer. This is still true. I'm currently writing a story I've actually came up with while designing an RPG world for one of my many unfinished systems. However, the main thing I plan to talk about is RPG mechanics. I've experimented and toyed with many different systems, some modifications of popular systems and some of my own or my friends mechanics. Instead of letting all that knowledge go to waste why not share what I've collected? Hopefully this will help with a few Game Masters or Players interested in dabbling around with their own systems.

Well. That's the introductions for myself. I hope you found it far more entertaining then me trying to figure out how to add images in my post!

Take care and game on!

Well maybe you can publish your novel, chapter by chapter here on steemit? A lot of people have done that and are still doing it. You can establish yourself as a writer quickly, I hope. Cheers mate! :)

That's not a bad idea...I've been wanting to write a fan fic about the Venatori from the Dresden Files. I might just do that here. Thanks for the idea!

Welcome to steemit! There are a lot of writers, travellers, foodies and artists around steemit, I can only welcome you from my perspective though 😊.

Here is my post about the basics of steemit. I was in similar position to you when I was struggling to grapple with this massive ecosystem. I hope it helps to speed up your learning curve.

Looking forward to it. Thanks!

Thank you

Writing a 100,000 novel is no mean feat. I wrote a 50,000 one last year as part NaNoWriMo. Just a first draft, but that was a lot of work. So well done, now it needs editing. That's the fun part.

I use Steemit to write, express, and hopefully meet others of a similar mind. So I think you are in the right place. I hope you find it beneficial.

Thank you! I try. I may actually write a fanfic or two and post it on here. The 100,000 word novel is close to my heart so I want to gather some experience before I attempt that story. I've tried my hand at NaNoWriMo though I never seem to hit the quota by the end of the month...so congrats on that bud. ;)

Yeh post away. I understand having writing close to your heart - keep that and use it as is best. But if you have or create other stories then this is the place. I have posted a lot of writing, none of it particularly polished, just experimenting with what works, and what is liked etc. It's a learning experience.
