My life as a programmer and voluntarist

My real name is Curtis Manwaring. That won’t tell you much as I’ve been many things in life but most of it could never really capture the essence of “who I was”. The same is true of the name. I'm most known for my software development in the field of Hellenistic and traditional astrological techniques that was rediscovered because of the translation project known as Project Hindsight that translated historical astrological texts from Greek and Latin (primarily) into English.

I have a strong interest in software development, philosophy, and mathematics (ZF set theory and pattern recognition for astrological correlation and semantic field mapping of significations). I’ve had secondary interests in jazz guitar and weight training that are more or less life long. I’ve been a programmer for about 21 years now on nearly a daily basis, though my first machine was a TRS-80 circa 1976. I took up programming mostly because nobody else was interested in programming the techniques we were finding in the ancient Greek translations back in the mid 90’s. When I finally came out with Delphic Oracle in 2003, all the same companies that had rejected my suggestions before (Astrolabe, Inc, Cosmic Patterns, etc), then sought to hire me. I then rejected their offers. Eventually Astrolabe bought the bankrupt company known as ACS (Astro Communications Services) and took over the ACS Atlas database of time zones and locations. I was using the ACS Atlas at the time in my software so that left me scrambling for a replacement. Initially I had reached an agreement to send my customers over to Astrolabe instead but eventually came to realize things would not work out. It’s a long story explained better here if you’re interested:

Long story short, I decided to write my own database known as the Terran Atlas that used the open source Olson time zone database. Interestingly this led to a lawsuit initiated by Astrolabe that caused Olson et al. to take down the database (temporarily) the day after Steve Jobs died. Nearly the entire computing world was affected negatively by this such as Apple, Sun Microsystems, etc because the Olson time zone database is used on servers worldwide to make sure your iPhone or Android encryption work, etc… The EFF took up the case and it was dismissed with prejudice against Astrolabe, Inc when they failed to proceed with the case.

The period that corresponded with the Federal Reserve financial crisis I had just set up my business in Las Vegas and first lived out of my camper in the desert. Eventually I sold my camper and became homeless and was using a laptop attached to Verizon wireless connection and cell phone as my only connection to civilization, but this was largely by choice.

During this period I had visited 47 different states including British Colombia. It was during this time that I realized that the perception that the news media creates is largely fake. The actual reality is very different in person.

More recently I’ve been working in the cross platform environment of Firemonkey using the RAD Studio IDE by Embarcadero Technologies and my interests have turned more toward understanding the underlying technology behind bitcoin. I first read the Satoshi Nakamoto white paper in Feb 2017 and then have been following Andreas Antonopoulos on the subject and this has become an obsession.

I’m semi-retired and own my own business (Zoidiasoft Technologies) and have investments in bitcoin and several alt-coins. I take care of my elderly father on the homestead that has been in the family since the civil war. Politically I lean toward voluntarism.

enjoy and happy steemit !!

Interesting story. Welcome to steemit! How long did you live in the camper and how long have you been homeless?

It's complicated. I sold the camper back in April 2009 (bought late Sept 2007) and was basically living out of the back of my truck. In the summer I'd live up off Kyle Canyon Rd in the desert just off Mt Charleston, get up, put my truck into neutral and coast all the way down the mountain to rte 95 (which was well over 10 miles), walk into Golds Gym up by Buffalo Ave, workout then shower (I had a gym membership), then go back up the mountain. The slope was just right most of the time to keep a speed of 55 mph down the mountain until about a mile from the intersection of rte 95. It's a long straight slope down.

In the winter, I'd go down to Slab City, CA or Vidal or somewhere in between. Lots of desert out there. Wifi was easier to get there than on Mt Charleston. Overall I was homeless from spring 2009 until spring 2013, but when I quit my job in 2006, most of my stuff was up on the homestead in NY. It's just that I lived a traveling lifestyle for most of that period. I used a friend's address for mine during that period in Vegas and also had a POB.

I was also spending quite a lot of time in the Seattle area and Eugene, OR and various other places when conferences were happening (such as NORWAC that takes place at Seatac or AFA in Phoenix, AZ, NCGR in Baltimore, etc). When the conferences were happening, I would typically be a guest at homes of colleagues in the astrological field. Most of this was by choice to save on expenses and sometimes I would have an informal financial arrangement to help out with expenses, but I never stayed in one place for more than about 6 weeks. I could have come back to the homestead, but conditions for my business were more favorable on the west coast. Eventually I came back to NY to take care of Dad.
