When dad convinces you to join Steemit?!

in #introduction8 years ago
Hello my dear Steemers!

My name is Karin - or, as of a year and a half ago since I moved to English speaking country, Karen - soon to be a student of Chemical Technology and current guest services agent (yes, I had to chose a fancy name, for I am only a humble hotel receptionist).

My life is far from boring, if you ask my friends (and/or my Facebook friends), especially because I moved to another country and that itself sounds awesome. If you ask me, I might give you a different answer. These past few months I have been working six days a week, just so that I would be able to afford my last vacation before my studying era begins (no, not because I need to pay my tuition).
It does not sound thrilling to be working all the time - some might even say I am crazy, having only one day a week off, especially those living by wise words like 'Live every day like it is your last'. I am that kind of person who likes to work hard and then takes time off for something new and exciting, usually traveling. I prefer to have a few awesome, once-in-a-lifetime moments a year, knowing I worked hard for them and they mean a world to me!

This August I am heading to London, England. Never been there and although this is not my usual vacation destination (my ideal summer vacation would be somewhere warm, sunny and near the sea), I am looking forward to have my shoes soaked with rain and to have that constant fear inside my head that I will lose my umbrella on a random bus or cafeteria in the middle of a foreign city.

Since I am so afraid of losing stuff , I do not want to lose my point here either, so I am moving forward. Or actually back. Back to the beginning, my beginning on Steemit.

It was a Tuesday evening after work and I was talking to my father, very conservative when it comes to smart phones, Facebook, sharing private information with the world, etc. I was taken by surprise when he started talking about that new social media platform (that I have never heard of) which will take over and how I should go for it. He has not joined it, because of reasons just stated in previous sentence, but I would be a fool not to try, he said.

It sounded interesting, like every thing he tried to sell to me and my sisters since we were kids. So I tried to sign up. It would not let me and I had to put my name on a waiting list. What the hell. I went and searched Steemit on Google and the first article on the top was saying something about it being hacked. Okay, I should just forget about it, is does not sound so great after all. Mission aborted.

But my curious side did not let me forget about it and so I joined it yesterday evening. I have to admit, I have never had such complicated password for anything, including my bank account and e-mail. Especially not for a social media platform where I get to share my words publicly. So I signed up and counted that as my achievement of the day. I went to sleep feeling so proud of myself.

Gave it a try this morning, ready to roll. And then it hit me. What should I look for here? What if I just start writing? Sure! But then again, what to write about? And why to share my life and thoughts with so many people, when sometimes I am not even willing to share certain things with every single friend on Facebook?! I left the computer alone, disappointed and thinking, this is really not for me! Time for coffee!

Again, curious to do something new (or maybe the coffee kicked in, I am not sure) I started to write my introduction to see where words and thoughts take me. It is a true experiment I am (and will continue on) doing here. Not the same kind of experiments that await me in September in the lab. Although, I like to think of this as my own little online lab, where I get to explore the new and exciting, the two things I lack when I am not traveling and enjoying my days off.

To conclude, this one is for my dad, hoping he will be happy to see that his words mean something to me. And also that he will know I am not giving up on things just because they are unknown and hard to start.
Because there are many more ahead!

Until the next one,
Karin

It's always good to have a verification photo in a intro post. Like you holding a sign with Steemit on it and a date. Good luck! Glad to have you here!

Aww well I missed that. Thank you for heads up. Will do next time :)

I wish my daughter was old enough she's only 8 though see her in this post here https://steemit.com/money/@ph111p/introducing-your-kids-to-blockchain-with-a-piggy-bank

This is not such a bad thing though. Think of how many years you have to teach and show her till she is in her twenties.

@k4r1nn Any advice for us dads that do want to get our daughters and nieces to join? Like what do you find compelling about this place other than the money?

On another note...

Just so you know, one of the quickest ways to get to the front page is by upvoting your commentors. You aren't obligated to upvote anything of course, but the more upvotes total in a posting, the faster you climb from "new" to "trending" and once there ,a whale is more likely to spot you and call the money fairy in for a visit.

I've upvoted you though because I like what you have to say.

The way I see it is that you can find a topic for everyone here and there are almost no limits when it comes to writing. It is a good way of expressing yourself, increases critical thinking and creativity. You can really show your talents in any form and that is what makes it special.
