Hi all!
I have just discovered this new medium thanks to a guest on the "That's so Retrograde" wellness podcast. I am a teacher, a writer, and a student of all things wellness. I love this idea of a community in which we can share our ideas and enjoy new information. Though I am not sure of the exact direction or focus that I will have in my posts, there is something that I have wanted to share. What better time than now? What better place than here? I so appreciate this space to develop and share my thoughts. I hope that you join me in this discovery!
Having spent a considerable amount of time alternating between anger and sadness over the current state of my country, I have realized that there is another feeling that I am responsible for. Though my social media rally cries of compassion did not alter the outcome of this election, the importance of gentle understanding has not faded. It just turns out that I need to expand the reach of that love.
The people that voted for the man who became our president are not outliers. Though their numbers are few in my personal relationships, they represent a significant portion of the population of America. And I am trying to understand. I know people that voted for Donald Trump that have amazing hearts, that work daily for the benefit of others. And yet, they have prioritized in a way that I cannot comprehend. But I do know this-people are tired. Tired of being told that the government serves the people, while politicians serve themselves. For some, this was too much of an obstacle to overcome, and they chose not to vote or voted for a man who said that he would do things differently. And they were able to overlook mounds of evidence that he was not a respectful representative of our country, some in the form of angry late night tweets, others in the vernacular of a man bent on division, because they were just so tired.
I am not trying to excuse the people who voted for this man. I cannot understand how making America great again could trump compassion, security, and general decency. But I do believe that it is now our responsibility to address the issues that brought us to this place, the lies that are being told, and the needs that are not being met. And rather than make jokes at the expense of those who support Trump, we need to love them, talk to them, and make our country whole again.
Welcome!
I am pretty sure that you will find this space supporting but not always necessarily of your views. All are welcome here. What is nice is that more often than not, discussions can be had on difficult topics with more civility than other spaces (twitter, facebook etc).
Speak with your voice, listen when appropriate and think deeply, and there is much fun to be had for all here.
Enjoy!
That is wonderful news...I think that a great deal of growth is possible here. Thank you for the response.
Welcome here, @sheripotter ! Steemit is a nice place and the community is very cozy, more than inn other socials ;)
I appreciate the welcome! I find the website so interesting!
Hello, welcome to Steemit!
I'm just curious, based on your words. Do you feel that if Hillary had won things would be better for the people of the US?
Thank you for the welcome. And yes, I do, though I would have loved to have the opportunity to vote for Bernie Sanders.
Well, meaning no offence, but I wonder if you have fallen victim to mainstream media propaganda. Trump is by no means the saviour of humanity, but I don't think a more corrupt individual than Clinton has ever actually run for office.
Her crimes are beyond belief, and I'm very grateful that I need not bear witness to the world that would have existed had she been elected president.
In regards to berniesanders.. You will be happy to know that he is actually on Steemit!
My dream is for a media outlet that will provide only facts! I appreciate the ability to have a dialogue about this. And love that Sanders fact!
Okay in the spirit of providing only facts, I should confess that it is not the real Bernie Sanders. Just an influential member of the community who has taken the name for his account.
And yes, by the way- I would very much like to the see the same in relation the media.
Lol
