Throughout my years in the military; I have seen many people unwise with their money.
Almost every soldier I know (especially e-4 and below) lives paycheck to paycheck. While the idea of financial security is great in the military; that doesn't mean squat if there's none left over at the end of the month..
This is the sad reality of the military. I believe lack of financial guidance is what causes alot of servicemembers to go broke after getting out. No money = no job. This accounts for many of the homeless vets.
Service members have a great program called the Thrift Savings Program https://www.tsp.gov
This is the military version of an IRA. I posted a link to the site for more information.
As a military community we need to police up our "battle buddies" and encourage them to make smarter decisions with their money. Our job as military members may not be as secure as you might think. Military downsizing can and has happened. Don't be that guy that’s broke. Educate your soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines. Encourage them to invest and save their money for their future.
