How do I earn money?
You earn a return if the company you invested in is acquired or becomes a publicly traded company (a process called an IPO) at a higher price than you paid. Some offerings may include additional ways of getting a return, such as profit-sharing.
Until then, you can expect that you'll need to hold on to your investment. You can't transfer your investment for the first year (with few exceptions), and even after that there may be no market to resell your investment. Learn more »
What do I get when I invest?
Unlike donation-based crowdfunding, when you commit money to a company on Republic you receive a security. It's up to the company to decide what type of security to offer, but companies on Republic typically use a Crowd Safe. Some companies may choose to also offer perks based on the amount you invest.
What is a Crowd Safe?
The Crowd Safe is a financial instrument offered by most companies on Republic.
Similar to a convertible note
A convertible note is a financial instrument commonly used for investing in startups. Think of it as a loan that gets paid back with a stake in the company when certain events occur (e.g. the company is sold).
Optimized for crowdfunding
Having hundreds or thousands of shareholders can slow a company down. When you receive a Crowd Safe you'll get the same financial outcome as a shareholder but with fewer voting and information rights.
Crowd Safe parameters
Unlike some convertible notes, the Crowd Safe does not have a maturity date or interest rate. The primary parameters of a Crowd Safe are the valuation cap and discount. These parameters determine how large a stake in the company you'll get when the Crowd Safe converts.
