Apple’s iPhone X is an extraordinary device which was created exclusively to commemorate the iPhone’s tenth anniversary. And while we’ve known from early on that the high end flagship (known initially as iPhone 8) would be an otherwise “limited edition” offering from Apple, a fresh analyst report this week asserts that the company plans to discontinue iPhone X when its successors are released later on this fall.
That’s according to the famed KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, who in his latest research note asserted that iPhone X as we know it would be discontinued later on this year — as opposed to being offered at a lower price point to spur new sales.
While it would certainly appear opportunistic for Apple to offer iPhone X at a lower price point, Kuo portends that such a move stands to result in the company cannibalizing on its upcoming iPhone lineup — which is expected to include an all new mid-range model boasting a 6.1-inch LCD display, Face ID and more for between $650 and $750, according to the analyst’s previous predictions.
“iPhone X would hurt product brand value & lineup of 2H18 new models if it continues to sell at a lower price after 2H18 new models launch,” Kuo suggested in his latest research note, a copy of which was obtained on Monday by MacRumors, adding that “Lowering iPhone X’s price after the 2H18 new models launch would be a negative to product brand value given 3D sensing and OLED display are features of the new high-price model.”
“Additionally, to sell iPhone X at a lower price may have a negative impact on shipments of the new 6.1-inch LCD iPhone in 2H18. Thus, we estimate iPhone X will reach end-of-life (EOL) around the middle of 2018,” Kuo added.
iPhone XI?
Apple’s iPhone X might be ‘on the way out’, if Kuo’s inherent predictions are indeed accurate; however it’s certainly worth noting that the company is expected to follow up later on this year with as many as three iPhone X-lookalikes — including a refreshed 5.8-inch OLED model, a larger 6.5-inch OLED model, and the mid-range 6.1-inch model we just mentioned — all of which should boast Face ID and other to be determined features.
But these devices might not be be associated with the ‘iPhone X’ brand when they launch, if today’s note is any indication. As we know from Apple’s past admission, the iPhone X moniker actually stands for “iPhone Ten.” So while their official names remain somewhat of a mystery, based on the current slate of rumors we can expect Apple to release the following iPhone models sometime between now and the end of the year:
‘iPhone SE 2’
5.8-inch OLED iPhone
6.5-inch OLED iPhone
6.1-inch LCD iPhone
