Also, if you make sure that your content is always original you can use things like the @originalworks bot to boost your post's payout a little to get more visibility.
If you plan to try to approach steemit as an author, make sure your content always has correct grammar and spelling and add some pictures as well. Try to make your content relevant to whatever topic it is that you are talking about so that it adds actual value to the platform. If you do this, then some of the bigger whales will probably notice at some point and give you some more pointers and votes.
You aren't going to just wake up one day and find that you are making a few hundred dollars a post, but if you are consistent you will be able to make something out of your work.
Also, try to comment on other people's posts; this will help build a community of people who actually follow your content and value your opinions etc. You also might want to do a little research about which tags you want to post your articles to before posting them. More general tags tend to be better and try to go after tags that see more traffic.
