Ishbosheth/ Eshbaal is found in the Mari letters as Ishi-Addu. Addu is a generic theophoric and is in other cases translated as Baal. In the Mari letters we find that the father of Ishi-Addu, whose throne name was Amut-pi-El I, was the enemy of Shamshi Adad. Amut pi El means "servant of the God El". The Bible records that Saul fought against the kings of Zobah. After the death of Amut Pi El, Shamshi Adad was quick to arrange a marriage between his son Yasmah Adad, and the daughter of Ishi-addu/Ishbosheth in order to make the tribe of "Ben Yaminah" his ally. But a rebellion broke out against Ishi-addu. Shamshi Adad sent troops to support Ishi-addu, but after about six years, the rebellion seems to have succeeded. This was David's civil war against Ishbosheth.

To the northern neighbors, the nation of Israel was called Qatna or Qatana. The ethnicity of Israel was Ben Yaminah, or Benjamin, after their first king, Saul of Benjamin.
Dean Hickman's 1986 paper was the first to make this connection between Shamshi Adad and Hadadezer. But, Ken Griffith and Darrell White have extended it to show that the kings of Qatna were the kings of Israel.
Thank you for this. I must look into it.
