This mosque is one of the beautiful mosques of the world whose photos are scattered in cyberspace. Its beautiful architecture makes it as one of the favorite photo objects. The mosque also holds the title as one of the largest mosques in Russia and eastern Europe.
Historical records show that the Qolsharif mosque was built in Kazan Kremlin in the 16th century until it was later devastated by Ivan the Terrible in 1552. Ivan the Terrible or Ivan Chetvyorty, was the first modern Russian Tsar. At the raid, Ivan also ransacked the building of Islamic buildings in the Kazan region.
The Qulsharif name embedded in the mosque refers to the name of a prominent leader and cleric in Kazan Khanate and is the last imam of the Qulsharif Mosque, Seid Kul Sharif before being destroyed by the Tsar Russi troops.
To commemorate the Kazan cleric and hero, the President of Tatarstan, Mintimer Shaymiev, in 1995 issued an order to rebuild the Qolsharif mosque. On February 21, 1996 the process of rebuilding began. The mosque building complex consists of building its own mosque, and is equipped with a library, publishing center and mosque management office.
The Qulsharif mosque reopened on July 24, 2005 marking the 1000th anniversary of Kazan attended by thousands of congregations gathered there to perform Friday prayers in congregation.
