Top 3 Reasons that Japanese Employees Are Never Fired (Notes from Under the Tatami Mats–28 … My Adventures in Japan)

in #japan6 years ago

“The unwanted employee was given a not-so-subtle hint that it was time to leave. ... Now. ... Go!”

For many years, lifetime employment at one company was virtually assured, at least until “Japan Inc” became “Japan sink.”

But as the economic bubble popped, the boom ended, and the economy sputtered during the 1990s, there were many stories of “salarymen” who were at a complete loss because had been laid off from their jobs. The saddest thing was that they could neither accept that fact nor tell their families.

A 12-hour work day … in the park

After losing their jobs, those pathetic men would continue to get up in the morning, get dressed, and "leave for the office.” But instead of going to work, they’d sit in the park all day and return home in the evening, trying to maintain the pretense that they were still employed.

Of course, their charade would not continue for long. Since Japanese housewives are typically in charge of the household finances, the wife probably became suspicious after noticing that the most recent month’s salary had not been transferred into the family account.      (Image source)

We won’t fire you. You quit!

During my many years in Japanese offices, I never heard of anyone being fired. But there were quite a few cases where the unwanted employee was given a not-so-subtle hint that it was time to leave.

In many cases, the hint (actually, the blunt message) was given not by the boss / manager, but by a colleague who had been delegated by the boss to tell the unwanted employee to basically “Get the hell ouda here.”     (Image source)

That’s not exactly the way it’s done in most countries, but, as they say … “This is Japan.”  *

I think there must be a quota that every company in Japan have at least one worthless employee who can't manage to do anything (or who doesn't even try) but who the company can't fire or manage to make quit so everyone grumbles as they do his work for him. It's a crazy system.

Ya, as you say "at least one." And sometimes, many more.

Japan sounds like an amazing place to visit, but I really have no desire to live there... This sort of reinforces that.

Indeed, it's a bit fishy. But the sushi is great!!

I have heard about sushi in anime a lot. hahaha

Mind if i ask About 12 hour working.. is it apply to all job level or only the middle to bottom job?? is it a regular way did 12 hour job in japan?? sorry for my bad english writing...

No, even many high-level businessmen worked 12-hour days. It was partly to show how diligent they are, and partly to show their loyalty to the company.

The thing is, it's not so much "working" for 12 hours, but simply staying at the office for 12 hours -- give or take a few hours.

In one office I worked in, the workers would sit around in the office, past 6 p.m., past 7 p.m., often doing work that could easily be delayed until tomorrow, or sometimes, even pretending to do work. Finally, at 7:30 or 8:00 p.m., the manager would say, "Tanaka san, you can go home now."

It was insane.

damn.. thank you then for the information about japan while you been there sir...

@majes.tytyty
Japanese work culture, it seems kind of worthless for the little guy?
I heard about something called "Karōshi (過労死)"?
Is this a real thing?

Sadly yes.

Thats horrible...

Yep, "Death from Overwork." In fact, I mentioned it in a recent post ... https://steemit.com/japan/@majes.tytyty/top-4-reasons-for-japanese-to-commit-suicide-notes-from-under-the-tatami-mats-26-my-adventures-in-japan

When I was in Japan, it was a relatively common occurrence. And of course, there were many who were overworked but did not die. You can be certain that their lives were not the most pleasant and rewarding.

I had a student who worked for a major company here drop dead of a heart attack on the job, The guy was a mid-level manager in his early forties. I also noticed at the companies I've taught at that they all have large smoking areas that are completely full whenever there is a break.

And I've heard Toyota, Mitsubishi, and a few other big companies will ask ambulances to turn off their sirens if someone drops dead at work or commits suicide when they come to collect the body.

Nicotine+caffein+fast-food+long work hours+no exercise+alcohol in the weekend=death @ workplace maybe?

That's so horrible, I heard about these things but I never really believed it...
How can you find happiness living like that... I guess for the people who are extremely passionate about their jobs and don't have a wife and kids, its perfect, until that day when your boss asks you to "fire yourself"...
