This is my entry in @jerrybanfield 's supernatural writing competition.

A Poltergeist wanting to say hi.

My experience took place back in early 2004. I was living in Melbourne, Australia in an old Californian bungalow with my partner. A friend was moving up from Tasmania to Melbourne, so we invited her to come and stay with us while she sorted things out with permanent accommodation. This wasn’t her first time, she had stayed with us before, but this time she brought her two young sons. The trip was to get the kids looking for a school as well as a new home. They were only about 4 and 6 at the time.

The kids were amazing, we loved having them around. They were full of life, energetic, bright, talented children. After this night, I don’t think we were the only ones in the house to think so.

After a night of the usual fun and games with our friend and the children, they proceeded to get ready for bed, however with some reluctance. One even jokingly asked if they could sleep in our room with us. We said “It’s probably best to sleep with mum” as we all had an early start. My partner and I had work and the kids were off looking for a new school. The boys slept in the same room with their mum. We could hear her reading them a story and not long after the flick of the light switch. They all nodded off to dreamland.

Soon after that, we proceeded to make our way to bed. After while I fell asleep. This is when things got crazy.

Sometime during the middle of the night, I woke up. I was laying on the right side of the bed and I was facing inwards on the bed towards my partner. I honestly thought initially I was in a lucid dream but upon closer inspection, I was awake. What I saw was one of the boys laying on top of the doona, laying directly on my partner. I looked carefully and closely. To be sure I wasn’t dreaming, I reached over to the child’s face and touched his soft cheek, yep, he was there. It appeared to be the youngest boy. I assumed because he wanted to come sleep with us, he just decided to get up and sneak in our room. I thought, OK, I must get out of bed very carefully and very quietly because I didn’t want to scare the boy or my partner at the exact same time. I rolled over and slowly got out of bed. I then got a better perspective as I could now see the child laying on top of my partner.

The room was reasonably dark, however it was still light enough with the ambient street light from outside to see that the boy was there. As I got out of bed to walk to the light, my partner who did not wake up from anything, jumped with the biggest fright of his life screaming “What’s happening, what’s going on?”

I don’t know what happened, but I could see the boy now laying on the floor, between myself and the door in a foetal position. I said to my partner “It’s ok, you've just unknowingly thrown the one of the kids off the bed as he was laying on top of you”. He was quite startled. I was trying to prevent this from happening but it did.

I was now on a mission to get this little fella back to his own bed. I stepped over the boy and I quickly turned the light on. Never in my life have a been so lost for words and in shock at what I saw or should I say, didn’t see. There was no one in the room except my partner and myself. I just stood in awe staring at my partner “What just happened?” I questioned myself. I didn’t know what else to say to myself or my partner. He then said, what woke him up, was one of the boys sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him which is apparently what gave him the big fright. My heart sank, I was in shock. He saw something similar but different to what I saw.

After calming down, I then opened the door and walked cautiously around the dark house. There was no one around. The house was empty, except the children and their mum were still in their room. Their door was closed. Being the middle of the night, I decided to head back to bed.

My heart was still racing while lying in bed staring at the ceiling. I just could not sleep from the previous happenings. The event and realising no child was in the room at all was going through my mind so I decided to get out of bed and have a cigarette. I smoked at this point of life, I don't smoke anymore, I’m sure if I wasn’t a smoker then I may have started that night. As I left the bedroom, I turned on the light to the hallway and as soon as I flicked the switch to go outside the light bulb blew with a massive bang. This made my heart sink even more with fear, however I didn’t feel threatened. An odd sensation.

I do remember reading about ghosts and poltergeists and if you have a presence in your home, lights can pop. It's their energy, possibly their way of saying hello. Honestly, I’m not too sure but this was slightly scary to me. It was awakening that there is possibly life beyond death. My partner and I both saw it, I saw the presence laying on the bed, my partner saw the presence sitting on the end of the bed. We are both atheists, so it was a real eye opener and an awakening to the possibility of something else beyond our life as we know it. I have heard that poltergeists can come out when young children are around because they love the energy and innocence of young children.

Having the children come to stay with us, I believe woke a spirit that has possibly been there for a very long time. Even before this night, the PC would simply start up during the night. The cats would occasionally get spooked but we just put that down to the old home making noises and old wiring.
After this night however, we were never bothered again.

That’s my story, I do have more but this is the biggest and scariest I have encountered so far. Oddly, I look forward to seeing something like this again.
