The egg has six panels of transparent blue enamel laid over gold. Each panel has the monogram of Maria Feodorovna topped by the Imperial Crown at the top, and the monogram of Tsar Alexander III topped by the Imperial Crown at the bottom. (Maria Feodorovna was the wife of Alexander III. The monograms are made of diamonds, the rest of the decoration was made of gold.

Inside was a surprise - a folding screen with six different portraits of Alexander III wearing a different uniform in each.

The egg is now the property of the Hillwood Museum in Washington D.C.
