My biorhythm wake me up early in the morning even on the weekend. Taking the old saying, "Take the crisis as an opportunity," I filled the big loss of weekend over sleep with early-bird discount of the movie.
Since it was the very early weekend, and I heard that many actors and actress were eager to star in this move, I chose this title. (I actually wished to see another move titled Along with God, but I changed my mind.)
This movie treats historical event called Park Jong-chol incident. In the real history, in 1987, Korean military dictatorship government tried to hide the torture case leading to death of Jong-chol Park, a univ student. So people in various fields struggled to reveal it to the world, which became the fuse of democracy movement of Korea society. That is the main story of the film.
By showing the relationship between the people and their emotion, which can be done only by film, I could sincerely understand the meaning of "struggle for democracy". It was quite fresh experience that I couldn't have got from books or documentary.
I think that generations born after democracy, especially those who ignore democracy, do not know what is the opposite of democratic society and how people live there, and so despise democratic society. In that sense, I hope that this film will be screened as much as possible in school.
The best thing about this movie is that it contains the fuse of the June fighting in just a cool way without superfluous emotion or superheroes. The director seemed to know that the actual history itself was so dramatic that he did not have to spend unnecessary seasoning on it.
(According to Jun-hwan Zhang, the director, some of the scenes have followed the testimony of those involved in the actual event.)
It is Korean filmmakers' tribute movie to the democratic society in the 21st century. As a modern Korean, I can not criticize this film.
