Korean culture has been heavily gaining mainstream popularity elsewhere. Even in Western countries, anything about Korea created huge following particularly with entertainment. Philippines is one of the countries which Korean culture has made a big impact. It started during the early 2000s when Korean entertainment has made a breakthrough in the country. So how's the extent of Korean culture influence in the country? Let's start discussing.

K-Drama (Korean drama)

I am an avid TV viewer back then when Asian dramas hit the shores of Philippine TV. Korean TV series achieved huge viewership even eclipsing the local TV soaps. The first Korean drama that I watched is "Lovers in Paris". I watched some of them after that, but not much of a big fan. There are lots of K-Dramas which became hugely popular like "Stairway to Heaven", "Full House", "Boys Over Flowers", and a lot more. In fact, K-Dramas are still seen in local TV during afternoon and late night in the country. Episodes of K-Dramas are uploaded in YouTube with subtitles. I knew a lot of friends watching K-Dramas on their gadgets, even passing it to their friends. It is an evidence that K-Dramas are still very popular in the country.

K-Pop

K-Pop is very popular in the country but I think it became widely popular during late 2000s. First batch of K-Pop acts that I remember making an impact in Philippine airwaves are 2NE1 (Its member Dara first became popular in the Philippines as Sandara Park, Wonder Girls, Girls Generation, Super Junior, etc. "Gangnam Style" star Psy even became globally phenomenal. Up to now, other bands such as EXO, TVXQ, BTS (they are making worldwide smash), and others are still doing will in Philippine charts. Some friends of mind and relatives are fans of K-Pop and loves listening to them even they don't understand the lyrics.

Korean foods

Korean foods gained popularity as well. I knew a lot of Filipinos who are cooking Kimchi and other Korean dishes. Even Korean restaurants are established in different parts of the country. Korean noodle dishes such as Samyang is now popular and even sold as instant noodles. There are videos on YouTube about Samyang challenge.

Korean movies

Who doesn't know the blockbuster Korean zombie movie "Train to Busan"? A number of Korean movies are even popular online and were watched by large Filipino audience.

Korean fashion

Korean fashion has also influenced a lot of Filipinos, particularly males which includes hairstyles. Even beauty products were sold here because of beautiful complexion of Koreans.

Besides these influences, there are lots of Koreans in the country. There are even English schools for Korean considering Filipinos' proficiency in English, as well as the low price of services. Baguio City is one of the most common places Koreans stay because of the colder climate. It's a good thing that friendship between the two countries is strong, and it will always be part of the history of the Philippines and Korea.

Korean culture has taken over Philippines but that doesn't mean we don't patronize our own... Actually, we can learn a thing or two in this Korean wave and we can follow the good things like how disciplined K-Pop idols are, how their K-dramas has a start AND a finish (unlike Filipino teleseryes who just keep the show running because many Pinoys like it even though it doesn't make sense anymore), and they embrace their food tradition no matter where they go.

Yeah, paikot-ikot ang teleserye ng Pinoy. Konti lang talaga ang maganda.
