나는 운동에 전혀 관심없고 저질 체력인 사람이었으나 우연한 계기로 스케이트 보드를 타게 됐고, 또 우연히 클라이밍을 시작하게 되면서 클라이밍을 한지는 2년이 되었다. 그동안 내 삶에는 많은 변화가 있었다.
마녀체력이라는 책 제목은 ‘마흔, 여자가 체력을 키워야 할 때’ 의 줄임말로 지어진 듯 한데, 마흔이 될 때까지 운동에 전혀 관심없던 저자가 수영을 시작하면서 철인 3종 경기를 뛰기까지의 이야기이다. 나는 저자에 비하면 아직 젊지만 어느 정도 공감이 되는 부분이 많았다. 육체에는 관심 없고 정신적인 활동만 고고하게 여겼던 저자의 모습이 마치 나와 너무 비슷했다. 그리고 운동을 시작하면서 얻게 된 인생에서의 변화들을 이야기 하는 부분이 공감이 가서 술술 읽혔다.
나는 종종 왜 더 빨리 운동을 하지 못했을까하며 아쉬워하곤 했는데 이 책을 읽으면서 상대적으로 운동을 매우 빨리 시작한 것이라는 걸 깨닫게 되었다. 20대 중반에 나에게 맞는 클라이밍이라는 운동을 만나게 된 건 무척 행운인 일이었다. 앞으로 몸관리를 꾸준히 잘 하고 안전하게 운동한다면 40년 정도는 더 운동할 날이 남았기 때문에.
그리고 이 책은 보다 더 나아가게 한다. 운동을 통해 보다 새로운 것들을 바라보게 하고, 그 경험을 통해 얻은 것들을 인생 전체에 전이시킨다. 이 저자의 글을 통해 나는 운동하는 스스로를 바라보게 되었고 다시 긍정하게 되었다. 내가 작가의 나이인 쉰까지 꾸준히 운동을 한다면 20년 이상의 운동 경력을 갖게 될테니, 그 때 나는 어떤 인생을 살고 있을지 기대가 된다. 또 더욱 용기를 얻어 보다 많은 도전들을 해도 괜찮겠다 생각이 든다.
