For years we've suspected that the DEA was the enforcement arm of the Big Pharma money making machine but there's been little evidence to prove it until now. Last week the DEA announced its intention to place kratom on Schedule I alongside such drugs as heroin, lsd, and peyote.
Kratom, if you're not familiar with it, is a plant that is indigenous to Southeast Asia and has been used to treat chronic and opiate addiction for hundreds if not thousands or years. It is currently used, quite effectively, by many thousands of people in the US for those very things.
In 2014 and 2015 there were 6 deaths attributed to kratom use. This contrasts to the 7,600 deaths from NSAIDS like aspirin and Tylenol. In other words, NSAIDs kill about 1300 times more Americans than kratom. Many doctors and healthcare professionals have come out [opposing the ban] (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/dea-kratom-schedule-i_us_57c5c263e4b0cdfc5ac98b83) but BigPharma can't monopolize a plant that you can grow in your home so they sent their enforcement arm out without even allowing for the usual 30 day comment period. There is a petition on the White House site that garned 110,000 signatures in 9 days asking the President to take action against the emergency scheduling but my suspicion is that the answer will be something like "The people in the DEA know what they're doing."
Many of pharmaceutical companies that due to the numerous sources and high demand for kratom, the herb for these plenty of benefits, pharmaceutical companies developed an interest in it. They have been exploring on other users of kratom aside from the above. Right now, they are digging into the herb’s potential for its pain-killing properties, as compared to painkiller morphine. They are also exploring the possibilities of kratom working as a muscle relaxant and as a treatment option for diabetes. As negative effect of kratom is relatively mild then its positive effect. It makes me truly sad to see it. Although im not surprised in the least bit. Kratom has really helped me with opiate addiction, because of it im not on things like methadone or suboxone. Its a matter of freedom. its not even about drugs anymore its about limiting freedom as much as possible.
