Everything here in North Central Florida is a more difficult than it was in Southern Florida. Boy was that easy living down there. Always warm. Semi tropical.
Here it's a lot colder. Not like the rest of the US, thank God. Thank You, Krishna. But still it's cold. This week it will be dipping into the 20's at night. Brrrr.
How to protect the water pipes from bursting. That was today. Blocking the vents on the crawl space. Wrapping everything that is outside in the old carpet pieces. I wanted to put a space heater under the crawl space but a space heater won't even fit under there. What were they thinking when they built this thing? Just another row of cinder blocks would have really made a huge difference.
Going to research what to do about a moisture barrier under there. Smells sour. No water. It's dry but still condensation builds up from the heated house and the cold ground.
And then there is the grapefruit tree. It hasn't been pruned in quite a while and is growing way too tall. But grapefruit trees are not very friendly. Not like the avocado trees in Southern Florida. Grapefruit trees have thorns all over them. I mean huge spikes.
Like the trees described in the Fifth Canto Bhagavatam in the hellish planets. It was a blood bath trying to prune that tree. Spikes in my hands, arms on the top on my head. Every time I turned around it was stabbing me.
This birth as a grapefruit tree is a seriously "defensive" birth. My hands are all torn up. They got me on the top of the head, on the arms.. You name it. But I got the fruit and managed to prune it somewhat. What a grouch!!!!!
Might lose the grapefruit tree. If it dips down into the 20's which it is supposed to do. I have some old carpeting I'm going to try to wrap around the base of the tree. But I think I'll lose it. Every night this week it is supposed to dip into the 20's.
Yes everything is more difficult in North Central Florida.

I understand dealing with cold. I live in Pennsylvania. The house I used to live in was old and the pipes froze often. We would keep the water running just barely. Also we had some kind of pipe heater things(sorry don't know name, 20 years ago). They looked like flat tape(1-1 1/2" wide) that wrapped around the pipes and then plugged it. They helped us alot, might help you also.
I can only send good thoughts for your tree.
Personally I hate the cold. Lived in Southern Florida and got thoroughly spoiled. the sky never even gets gray. Always bright blue, except for chemtrails... :>) thanks for the good wishes. I remember now about the heated tape.... I just moved in and am pretty much overwhelmed with all the work needed o this house. Much more than I anticipated. It really was a nicely painted dump.... I guess I'll just leave the water running slowly. It's going to be all week. It's a well with an electric pump. Here's hoping I get through this week. There's already a mold problem in the crawl space. It's such a small crawl space. Not sure it is even one foot off the ground. Called some specialists to see what can be done. If I could get under there I would spread poly and close the vents and stick a dehumidified under there. But It looks to me like there needs to some excavation to even do anything under there. The joys of home ownership.Happy New Year...
You're really great
