Merida, Venezuela. Estado Merida
"Sitio del agua grande".
The lagoon is of glacial origin and is about ten thousand years old. The original course of the Mucubají creek, which drained its waters in the Chama River, was sealed by a frontal morain that formed the lagoon and crossed by the Boconó fault, which diverted the flow towards the Orinoco river and finally the Atlantic Ocean .
