There is so much to shoot in the San Francisco area that as a photographer I’d need a solid week to cover everything. One thing I didn’t get a chance to do was drive on Route 1. I did manage to drive a few miles before we had to drop off our friends in the airport - which is how I was able to get this shot.
If you're wondering how photographers get the water to look silky smooth - it's with the use of ND (neutral density) filters. It's like putting sunglasses on front of your lens in order to be able to get long exposures in the daytime.

I am in love with my ND filters. They allow for so much more expression and capture of motion during the daylight hours. Do you have a graduated one, and would you suggest investing in one if so?
I don't have a graduated filter as Lee Filters are very expensive. Probably around $400 for a set of 3. I wouldn't use it often as I don't shoot many landscapes and cityscapes, so it wouldn't make sense. So currently, to answer your question - no I wouldn't get one. If I had disposable income I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
But one way around using graduated filters is shooting in HDR. Sure you're not getting the shot in camera - but you will get similar results.
I would however invest in a circular polarizing filter as the one I have is pretty beat up and you can't get the effects of a cpf in Photoshop / Lightroom.
Thanks for the comment.
Polorizers are the bomb. Have one, never comes off my 17-50 2.8
