This day is burnt into my memory! The Andvord bay was like a lake and the sky was incredibly blue. However, even though this photo makes my smile, it doesn't quite capture what it was really like in that moment.

The pass was clear for now. The last few weeks had been tough on the sailors. The waters were full of ice and constant danger. They took turns taking watch, two men at a time to ensure they weren't caught unaware. But the constant state of alert had pushed the men past their limits. Some started to see things other than ice. The clear water was welcome.
