RE: Learn Portuguese With Cryptogee - Comparing Duo Lingo With Hello Chinese

in #languages7 years ago

Yes I used to Duolingo when I was learning Spanish originally. I'm now completely fluent in Spanish by doing my own total immersion method and also doing all of Pimsleur, Rosetta, and everything else I could get my hands on.

Duo was a waste of time. I'm not sure how the Portuguese would be but I have a feeling it's probably quite similar to the Spanish which is not so good.

My recommendation is to watch a bunch of movies in Portuguese with the subtitles on and then find a good forum to talk to people that speak English and Portuguese while at the same time doing Pimsleur and Rosetta if you can.

Interesting, thank you @jeezle for your comments.

Can I ask though, what didn't you like about Duo? As I said in the video I found it very helpful brushing up my German and it worked for me learning very basic Swedish, and in fact helped me remember some forgotten tenses for Spanish.

I'm going to take your advice with the forum though, not sure where to source some Portuguese films though, or maybe I could find English films that I know well, that are dubbed in Portuguese?

Definitely going to watch Ciudad de Deus again :-)

Wow OK, I've just gone onto Pimsleur, I only want to learn the language for fun, I don't have to, so £450 is way too much.

This for me is the main advantage that Duo and Hello Chinese have over a lot of these apps, is that they're free :-) If I ever move to Rio, I'll go for more serious route :-)

Well the best way to really learn is using the total immersion method. It's easier when you have a language like Spanish or Chinese than it is with a language like Portuguese. You can actually just go into Netflix and change the audio to Spanish, French, Italian etc.

I think I'm going to make a post about the total immersion method soon. If you look it up you'll find a lot of interesting information.
