An Organization is what made by a set of people. An Organization or any Organization Big or Small, from Small Companies to Big Corporates in general contain Four Types of people from a higher level perspective and they are; 1) Drivers 2) Doers 3) Slackers & 4) Inhibitors.
Drivers are the people who have that Zest for the Growth of the Organization and the Passion to push themselves & their teams beyond limits. They are the Dreamers, Thinkers & Leaders who Believe in their Ideas Firmly & Propel themselves into experiencing their Dreams turning into Realities & Achieve Greater Success for the Firm.
Doers are the Hyper Realists who can turn Ideas into Products. Thoughts into Things. Models into Machines. And Concepts into Content. They are the people who go and become the Essential “We” of the organization.
Now there are Slackers, who just go by the concepts of works days & pay days. Punctuality, routine, writing too many emails and responding to every email. And scheduling too many meetings and attending every meeting. These are some of their traits. Just being there adhering to the organizations policies, saving the job, and going back happy with their pay checks is something they've subscribed to.
And then there are Inhibitors. These guys posses some of the qualities from the above Slackers type & also some additional qualities to become a real road blockers to almost everything that is progressing. Trying to prove their point out of no sense and deviating the project towards something nonsensical and eventually draining out the entire team’s energies and enthusiasm down the river is something that comes very naturally to them. Becoming the real weeds in the organization and eventually the value killers of the organization is something they unknowingly invest themselves into.
The Drivers, Doers and the Slackers are totally fine in their positions. Either they are individually Drivers/Doers/Slackers or any combination of the three, they are just Fantastic & Imperfectly Perfect on the whole as an Organization.
Now where the real problem comes is with the Inhibitors. These are the people who enter the organization with a mask of a Driver or a Doer and eventually become an Inhibitor slowly and steadily robbing the organization of its growth pace and becoming an Inhibitor to the core values of the organization.
Several organizations enact mass downsizing due to changes in the Technological/Economical/Political landscape or due to financial situation of the firm itself. But that is totally a wrong idea when the organization suddenly takes such a measure. That basically damages the fabric of the organization’s consciousness and leaves long lasting stains on the morale of the employees. And that is one hundred percent brutal and irresponsible governance of the organization’s leadership. Instead keeping a constant watch on the organizations health, fix the situation of potential inhibitors time to time and making sure the drivers & doers are empowered at the right scale is extremely important and this can essentially insure the organization even in the worst climates and in fact drive growth in all conditions.
Also several organizations take it to a point where the clogged energy system of the firm goes to hazardous levels and the signs of the negative influence of the Inhibitors starts surfacing as highly visible. This is extremely detrimental in nature for the organization & cannot be left unattended.
A lot of times in life it becomes essentially important to know What Not to Do than What to Do. And likewise for an Organization it becomes Super Important to know Whom Not to Have versus Whom to Have. And the Concept of “The Org Quadrants” is the Answer.
The bottom line is, just keeping an eye out in the market hunting for more Drivers & Doers is not the only important thing. Keeping an eye out within the organization for potential Inhibitors and taking appropriate actions is equally important for an organization’s overall Growth & Success. This kind of Conscious Vigilance & Greater Governance in an Organization can Build Consistent Immunity within the Firm and Drive Organic Growth for the Organization at All Times.
Thanks for the piece. I’m totally a Doer and now realizing that since I’m not a slacker or inhibitor. I need to limit my interactions with these types. @swt3df1
