영어 공부 할 때 도움되는 어플: Amazon Kindle

영어를 잘하고 싶어서 어떻게 공부해야될지 많이 찾아보니 ESL, EFL 이라는 용어가 있더라구요. ESL은 English as a second language이고 EFL는 English as a foreign language 라고 합니다. 이 분류는 영어학습자의 상황에 따른 분류 같습니다. 예를들면 영알못인 제가 영어권 국가로 어학연수를 가면 저는 ESL 상황에 있는 것이고, 한국에 있다면 EFL 상황에 있는 것이지요.

I wanted to be good at English, so googled about learning English. and found interesting terms, ESL and EFL. ESL is English as a second language, EFL is English as a foreign language. Those look telling the condition of English-learner. For example, If I(English-noob) is in an English-speaking country, I am in ESL class. Me in Korea? Absolutely EFL.

정확히 기억은 안나지만 어떤 글에서 EFL 상황의 학생은 현실적으로 영어를 접할 기회가 많지 않기 때문에 독서를 많이 하는 것이 중요하고 했습니다. 영어 학습에서 독서는 다시 두가지로 나뉘는 것 같더라구요, 각잡고 영어 공부하는 것과 재미삼아 읽는 독서로요. 각잡고 읽는 것과 달리 여가시간에 재미로 읽는 것은 그냥 슬렁 슬렁 읽을 수 있죠. 아무튼 가능한 많이 읽는 것을 extensive reading이라고 합니다.

I didn't remember clear where I read ... but a article I found in the Web said that reading as many as possible is so important for students in EFL because they have less exposure to English than students in ESL. it looks that there are two different reading style like reading in English class and reading for pleasure. Reading for pleasure means that students read whatever they want, whenever they want. it is called as extensive reading which makes students read as much as possible without pressure.

보통 2000단어면 충분하다고 말하지만 저기서 단어는 하나의 단어가 아니라 word family를 말합니다. eat, eats, ate, eating, edible 이런게 전부 하나의 family 입니다. 영어는 100,000 word family가 있고, 원어민들은 20,000 word family 정도를 안다고 합니다. 그리고 독서를 즐기려면 8,000~9,000 word family 정도가 필요하다고 하죠. 영어 공부하려면 독서를 해야하는데, 독서를 하려면 영어를 잘해야된다니 ... 닭과 달걀 상황이죠.

It's well known in Korea that 2,000 words are enough for English. but the trap is the 'word' isn't a single word. it's word family. eat, eats, eating, and edible... all those are one family. English has 100,000 word families and natives know 20,000 word families. Enjoying reading a book(adult fictions) required 8,000~9,000 word families. We need to read books to learn English, and reading in English required quite nice English. this is chicken and egg situation.

지금까지 장황하게 영어 공부에 독서가 중요하지만 역시 쉬운게 없다고 얘기한 이유는 해결책(?)이 있기 때문이죠. 바로 Amazon Kindle 입니다. 아마존에서 구매한 ebook을 읽을 수 있는 어플인데, 여기에 word smart 라는 기능이 있습니다.

I explained why reading is so important to learn English and its difficulty. there's no such free lunch.. but you can buy it cheaper. the solution is Amazon Kindle. it is an application which you can read E-book bought from Amazon.com. the app has Word smart option.

위는 킨들 앱으로 읽은 러브크래프트 소설 Dagon의 첫페이지인데요. 몇몇 어려운 단어 위에 간단하게 뜻을 풀이해주기 때문에 어려운 소설을 읽을 때 부족한 어휘를 쉽게 알고 넘어갈 수 있습니다. 이런식으로 Old man's war 를 읽었는데 정말 좋더라구요. 이제 남은 것은 재밌는 책을 찾아서 읽는 것 입니다.
