Protesters gathered in the Sahat al-Noor neighborhood of Tripoli and tried to vandalize a government building. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse the protesters. In response, protesters hurled stones, Molotov cocktails and fireworks at security forces.
Lebanon's internal security forces said in a Twitter message that grenades were fired at members of the security forces in charge. Two of the grenades exploded. The grenade blast injured at least nine people and damaged military vehicles.
The Lebanese army said in a tweet that 31 army members had been injured in attacks by protesters in Tripoli. Five protesters were arrested, they said. The Lebanese Red Cross said 35 people had been taken to hospital for treatment and at least six others had been treated at the protest site.
Lebanon's state news agency National News Agency (NNA) said 31 of the 124 injured had been taken to hospital for treatment by the Lebanese Emergency Response Unit. At least 228 people were injured in the clashes, the ANA reported.
Earlier, the Lebanese government announced that it would extend the curfew to prevent coronavirus infections across the country until February 8. Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said in a tweet that he did not directly blame any party for the protests, adding that those behind the incident in Tripoli wanted to send a political message. They have tried to take advantage of the anger of the people.
