In the realm of crypto art, Trevor Jones stands as a titan, with his oeuvre totaling an impressive $24 million, firmly positioning him among the world's top 10 most successful crypto artists. But Jones' journey to this dizzying height was far from a smooth ascent. Much like the volatile cryptocurrency market, it was a ride of thrilling highs and crushing lows.
Jones, a traditional painter, was always fascinated by the nexus of art and technology. His pursuit led him to experiment with QR code oil paintings in 2012 and delve into augmented reality art in 2013. However, it was his investment in Bitcoin in 2017 that kindled a deep fascination with the cryptosphere and its underlying blockchain technology.
Riding the 2017 bull run, Jones saw his portfolio balloon, only to witness it evaporate during the infamous 'crypto winter' of 2018. Unfazed by his losses, Jones channelled his energy from being a crypto trader to becoming a crypto painter, transforming his financial adventure into artistic exploration.
He recalls, "I caught that bull run and made a lot of money and then lost a lot of money in 2018. It all went up and all came crashing down. I was following whoever I could on Twitter, the likes of Vitalik Buterin and John McAfee. Very quickly, I started having thoughts that this is something I would like to explore with my art.”
In 2018, crypto art was a fledgling genre, largely unrecognized in traditional art circles. Seeing an opportunity, Jones rented a commercial gallery to exhibit his pioneering crypto-themed artwork at the Crypto Disruption Exhibition.
Reflecting on his early work, Jones said, "The 12 paintings I did were all inspired by the crypto space... I focused on some of the characters, such as Satoshi Nakamoto, ideas and themes like the bull and the bear, hodling and riding the wave."
Jones' exhibition was a smashing success, with nearly all the paintings selling to anonymous collectors worldwide, who paid him in Bitcoin and Ethereum. This novel experience of selling art and receiving payment instantly was a revelation for Jones. "To get paid immediately was just so eye-opening," he mused.
Some artworks were even sold before the exhibition's inauguration, further cementing Jones' belief in the potential of crypto art. A simple Twitter post showcasing his work was enough to seal the deal.
